I want to get a lot of input on this so I can really know if I’m being reasonable or not. FH and I are trying to save more because we want to buy a house when we get married, and he will probably need a new truck by then. We’ve been looking at our budget to see what areas have excess spending. He thinks I spend too much on my hair, but I do not want cut back on going to the salon. I get partial highlights and an eyebrow wax for $100(after tip) every 8-9 weeks, so 6 salon trips per year. I use cheap shampoo and conditioner and don’t wear any makeup so my annual beauty budget is probably less than $700. I don’t think I'm spending too much, but what do you think? How much do you on yourself?

I now go even further with my hair cuts because I'm on a pretty tight budget but I used to get a trim and eyebrow wax with tip for around $55 every 6-8 weeks.

I get a haircut, color touch up about every 2-3 months, about $200 with tip.

    Mani/pedi every 3 weeks, $55 plus tip.

Wax every 8 weeks (comes out to about $100/visit) prepay for the services, so I only pay $20 for the tip.

I only get my hair done every six months. One because it's bad on your hair to color it often and two because it's expensive. Thank goodness the ombré trend is in. I leave my roots at my natural color then blend out the ends with a lighter blonde. Also cheap shampoo is bad on your hair. If you're going to spend the money to get your hair done, spend the money to get good shampoo to maintain it. A good quality shampoo will make your color last longer.

Do not skimp out on your hair ever if it is important to you! You will find other ways to budget. I skimped awhile back and it was horrible for my mental health.

I go every 6-8 weeks and it's about 250 since as you see form my profile pic I do fashion colors.

Your costs do not sound unreasonable to me personally. Maybe a way to save money would be to let the highlights grow out or get another color that will look natural growing out so there are overall less trips per year.

I do all over color and balyage about 2x per year (250 w/tip) and haircut about twice a year (about 60 dollars with tip). I have curly and thick hair so it takes a good amount of product and conditioners to keep it tame. My manicures are every few months (special occasions) and pedicure only about 2x per year. Definitely my biggest beauty expense for the year is my hair consistently. I buy expensive makeup but I use it sparingly so I don't consume much in a small period of time.

When FH and I moved in together he couldn't believe all of the high end skin products and thought it was wasteful. Now he's using my expensive creams and loving the results!

Walking into our marriage we discussed what as a family we will be prioritizing: sounds crazy but I told him that, for me, good skin care ranks up there with food. If we ever had to make the decision, we would be eating out of cans before I gave up my monthly facials and yearly laser treatments.

So to save for our wedding and later a house, that is exactly what we are doing- cooking a LOT at home and buying only what we need. Most people don't realize how much they spend on eating out. Beauty/ maintenance is a drop in the bucket compared to the $$ many spend on eating out

So I'm very fortunate, but my Mom cuts my hair. I haven't colored my hair at all in years because I felt that it was doing damage to my hair. The one time I went to a salon for a cut and color (about 8 years ago) it was $300 so I don't intend to ever do that again because it is a waste. So I spend nothing on actual hair cuts or styles anymore. I have been trying different things to ensure that my hair stays healthy, like using kerotin and switching the shampoo I use daily. My favorite shampoo is actually a bar shampoo from lush and if you want your hair to look and feel soft and full, then i would recommend looking into lush shampoo bars.

I go every 8 weeks and get partial highlights and a cut for a little under 200. FH usually says some thing if I get my nails done every 2 weeks but I cut back on that because I really can't fit it in my budget all that often.

I used to cut my hair every 4 years or so, but I’m trying to be more adult about it so now it’s twice a year. Spend $35 including tip each time. If you guys are trying to cut back, I really do think you should look at this area. Of course you don’t want to, but no one does, and it wouldn’t be fair for only him to make changes. Can you wax your own brows? I’ve been doing my own forever.

I think what you spend is very reasonable.

I have curly hair, so I don't cut it often, but cuts are expensive and products are expensive. I get a cut about every six months at $125 plus tip. I spend about $100 on products every 3-4 months.

I spend about $700-1k on makeup, it's my hobby and I love trying new things. I get lash extensions 2-3 times a year for special events at $80 each time. I get 3-4 mani pedis a year at $65 plus tip. I've also started investing in skincare, so that is probably another 500-700 a year.

OP, definitely don't change the hairstylist you go to. It's so hard to find a stylist you like. We just moved and FH went to a new place twice and both times she ruined his haircut. He has the simplest cut. In fact he cuts it himself usually but we left behind the mirror he used. Seeing the hackjob she did on him, there's no way I'd go to her. Not worth the risk going to a new person

Ah @P.F. my long lost twin! I also cut my hair once a year (20 euros), pluck my own eyebrows and use drugstore shampoo (I switch the brands up from time to time).

In January I got a tangle teaser brush and 2 bottles of a detangler spray online. I just started on the second bottle, that was about 35 euros for the 3 items and I will buy that spray again once I run out.

Other beauty related costs would be moisturizer and sunscreen, about 30 euros for the first, every 6 months and 20 for the second, once a year.

I have run out of my preferred moisturizer for ages now and I wish I could replenish, but being in strict savings mode due to the wedding, I make do with whatever cheap/free alternative I can. My skin is not as happy as it used to (though I think only I know the difference) and this is the one thing I will treat myself on, right before the wedding.

I rarely use any makeup, so I don't invest in that at all right now. I use my existing collection (and yes, most of it is expired by now, but I still use it, don't judge xD).

@Sos0033 We don't really need to cut back, we're just looking for areas where we are spending a lot to see if we can spend less and save more. Just in case we aren't always doing as well financially as we are right now. I wish I could do what you do, unfortunately I can't do my own brows, or cut my own hair. I have a visual alignment problem so I would never be able to get both sides the same Smiley sad

@P.F. I feel ya, FH works on the road so he's always stopping in different places to get a cut, and it amazes me how bad people can mess up a very simple men's cut! Hope your beau finds himself a better hairdresser, or a new mirror soon. Even though my cut is so simple I could probably let anyone do it, I feel like there's also a loyalty factor to consider.

@Shelob No judgement here, all my makeup is expired too. I go so long between using it I should probably by all new each time but I don't. Glad somebody else out there is using old make up.

    @WooPigSooie &@shelob lol!

I used to use Main and Tail

(super cheap shampoo also usable on horses) but my hair was wirey and dry. I woke up one morning and thought "I want nice hair." So I switched to other shampoos until I landed on herbal essences Smiley smile I also used Ion when I was diving every day because it helped with damage.

I didn't even know makeup expired D: I bought makeup once a few years ago and I'm still using it! ETA: I think customer loyalty is definitely a factor in the salon business! I'm hoping we get a mirror so he can save money and I can see my whole outfit without standing on a toolbox lol. It stinks your FH deals with the same problem on his travels :/ It's important to feel good when you leave a salon

I'm cheap. I use drugstore shampoo and coconut oil occasionally for a conditioner, though I just bought shampoo and conditioner from Young Living.

I get a hair cut at Great Clips for $15 every 2-3ish months, with a self-trim on my bangs about halfway through. I splurge occasionally on a good cut (like in a few weeks, to prepare for the wedding) and/or some color. I don't really do routine touchups when I get color done. Again, I'm cheap. I'm also pretty low-mainenance and never really understood the point of paying a ton of money for a simple haircut. But that's me, and I get that other people are way different (and often have really different needs).

I get my hair trimmed every 2 months and colored every 4 months. I buy salon brand shampoo/conditioner because it's worth it to me. However, I don't wash my hair every day. I'm also saving for a house but I budget the salon visits in. It's not like the $110 I spend every 4 months is going to make or break me being able to save for a house.

@OP I totally second P.F. on keeping the hairstylist that works for you, my haircut is the simplest thing to do, I simply want my hair in one length and I ask for how much I want gone, 5cm, 10cm, whatever it is at the time. You would expect that is pretty straight-forward, but the amount of horror stories I have is ridiculous. Somehow 5cm got translated into 20-50cm or one length meant layers. I understand my hair is long enough that most people would not think twice about chopping a bit more off and it wouldn't be a big deal, or think my hair is too much, but hey, it's my hair, I am allowed to keep it however I like and yes, if you mess it up, it upsets me!

Took me ages to train a hairstylist to take me seriously and give me exactly what I want without giving me hell about it, no way am I changing her!

@P.F. Oh yes, make-up, or any hygiene product (shampoo included) has a specific shelf life and you should throw it out after it is expired (but I don't, I keep everything until it clearly goes bad, irritates me in some way or it simply becomes unusable). If you want to know when something expires, check the label at the back, there should be a jar with a number and the letter M, like 6M or 12M. The M stands for Month and the number tells you for how many months something is good to use for.

Herbal essences shampoos smell divine, but they don't work well on my hair. I am using Syoss now (not sure if you have it there), but I should change it up after this bottle runs out. Schwarzkopf products work really well for me and Elvive is also one of my favourites.

I just got my hair done (the wedding style!) yesterday and it was $261 and I tipped $60. This was for highlights and a cut. I know it's A LOT, which is why I tend to only go twice a year (I do balyage so as the color grows out it's not a crazy root line). I also have tried through the years to find cheaper spots, but every single time I absolutely hate what I get and always end up back at my East Village spot. There's a reason they charge what they do.

$100 w/tip for a cut every 8 weeks. Plus $70 if I do color, $25 for a very rare manicure.
