I want to get a lot of input on this so I can really know if I’m being reasonable or not. FH and I are trying to save more because we want to buy a house when we get married, and he will probably need a new truck by then. We’ve been looking at our budget to see what areas have excess spending. He thinks I spend too much on my hair, but I do not want cut back on going to the salon. I get partial highlights and an eyebrow wax for $100(after tip) every 8-9 weeks, so 6 salon trips per year. I use cheap shampoo and conditioner and don’t wear any makeup so my annual beauty budget is probably less than $700. I don’t think I'm spending too much, but what do you think? How much do you on yourself?

That sounds incredibly reasonable! I do full foil and roots for a blonder look every 7-8 weeks with cut and conditioning treatment and it's like 200 after tip, but I also go to a redken high-class salon bc I have complicated hair so I might be above the average

I haven't cut my hair in over 2 years, so I am a terrible example. I cannot imagine spending 700 dollars are maintaining my hair! I also don't cut so I can donate once every 2 years !

Hi OP! So I’ve always been blonde and pay quite a penny but I couldn’t imagine being any other hair color. I go to the salon every 3-4 months depending on how my hair looks. I went this morning and paid €210 ($250) for a full head of highlights and a cut. Worth it. I used to get gel nails and a pedicure of every three weeks at ~ $40/45 but I have yet to find a good place in my new home. I get a Brazilian sugar (wax every month) for €40 ($47). Anything else, I do at home myself (like eyebrows). I do spend more on self care products than H. If you highlight to blonde and want to eliminate one or two salon trips per year, I recommend using a purple toning shampoo once a week (mine was $20 in the states and at once a week usage, lasts forever) and sulfate free shampoo and conditioner (L’oreal makes really good ones and there is a brand at target that is awesome - not sure the name but it’s not name brand and it’s in a white bottle that highlights coconut oil) for regular use. Also a deep conditioning hair mask at home and limiting usuals of any heat styling tools. These all let me stretch out salon visits considerably because they’re easier on my hair and I only have to go 3-4 times per year. I agree 100% that self care is very important for you. Please please don’t try to cut your hair at home or box dye to save a couple of bucks because both can go horribly wrong. I don’t think your expenses are too much, especially where you are financially. I disagree with what Rachel said. Saving is a major priority for H and I and I am still able to get my hair done as I do and we are still able to go on vacations and live our lives. I would 100% not be happy with brown hair or dark roots all over the place and that would slowly start to affect my daily attitude. You just have to budget appropriately. For what you’re spending, I think it’s reasonable.

@WooPigSooie, If I may make a budgeting suggestion...I would recommend not looking for things each of you can cut from your expenses and instead set a limit on how much discretionary spending each of you are allowed to spend and still make your saving goals. I think it would help reduce this comparison of "I'm cutting more stuff" or "you're spending more money than me."

If you have, for example, $100/month for you to spend on what ever you want, $100/month that FH can spend on whatever he wants, and $100/month on going out as a couple/shared discretionary expenses, then it ends up being on more equal footing. And it lets you decide where you want to place your spending priorities for non-essentials. This is the method my FH and I use.

@Duckie, I totally agree with what you are saying, I think our situation is just a little different than most. I am a bookkeeper so tracking people’s spending and letting them know what areas are getting out of control is part of what I do for a living. This is one of the things FH loves about me. He has been working 15 years longer than me and makes more than 3 times as much as I do yet has nothing to show for it. He doesn’t own a house or car and just began investing for retirement this year. We are meeting our current savings goals and these are our personal spending accounts we are looking through together, to help him learn more about his spending habits and where he could save more. I’m obsessive about knowing where my money goes and he has never paid any attention to his. He wanted me to just handle it all for him but I want him to pay attention too, that is why we are so closely examining each other’s spending. We’re not going at each other over who’s buying what, just pointing out areas we think we could be saving in. What I spend on my hair is actually a huge chunk of my annual budget, which I think shocked him since I don’t care that much about my hair.

I think you spend a reasonable amount, but then again, I don't know your financial situation.

I get my hair relaxed and sew-in extensions every 8 weeks - $350/visit

I get dip on my nails and a gel pedicure once a month - $120/visit

Laser hair removal every 6-7 weeks (temp. cost until I complete my package) - $110

I spend very little on make up. Probably $50 a year.

In total, I spend about $4,550.00 a year on beauty.

In my book you're doing great!

Right now I am getting highlights every 6-8 weeks and it costs about $100 each time. I get my nails done every two weeks at $40 each time. I also spend more than $500 a year in make up (its my weakness). I do my eyebrows myself and I just paint my toes because I like to change the color so often. I really don't think that what you spend is that much at all. I spend more than your annual beauty budget on just my nails.

I barely cut my hair once a year. I use shampoo/conditioner that is about $5 a bottle. I don't do hair styles and colors.

I don't track those things, but I just wanted to say that your FH has no say in your self-care/appearance. would he want you to walk around looking like a bum? my FH is very into saving for a house, this and that, but he would never tell me I spend too much on my appearance... I just find it weird.

eta- unless you spend UNBELIEVABLE amount of $.... than that would be a different story, but the 4 amount you gave is not even much so he should be happy, lol

Hair: relaxer, trim, rinse: $330 every 8 weeks. In between my visits to the hair stylist I do my own hair weekly for two reasons: one to put that money elsewhere (lol) and two, because I can do my own hair in less than 90 minutes versus going to the salon and being there for 3-plus hours.

Nails: $45 every two weeks in the summer, about half of that cost in the winter.

Skincare: an average of $150/month: I use pharmacy store products (Clean & Clear). I tried Clinique for two months and it dried out my skin (sometimes something that costs more doesn't necessarily mean it works better), except I do use their eye cream. Also, I purchase Vitamin E Body Butter from The Body Shop, and I buy them in bulk when it goes on sale.

Makeup: The past two months I went on a lipstick shopping spree so I'll be set for a while, but my budget is very low for makeup because I don't wear a lot from day-to-day. M-F I mainly wear lipstick and fill in my eyebrows.

I was getting eyelash extensions but I recently took a break from them: that was $90 every 3 weeks for a refill.

As far as your situation is concerned, a new truck is important to him, and your beauty routine/purchases are important to you. I don't know your financial situation, but I would just make sure that the two of you have an open discussion about it instead of one or both of you just stomping your feet and saying no, absolutely not. You express to him that this is important to you, and he can express why he needs a new truck.

    Full highlights every 6 months @ $200 + $40 tip = $480 per year.

    Hair cut every 2 months @ $100 + $20 tip = $720 per year.

Brows + mani / pedi = roughly $600 per year.

    Total = $1800 per year.

That doesn't include make up and skincare. And Botox which is about $900 per year Smiley smile

I get it trimmed maybe twice a year (its long and I like it that way), just to take care of split ends. I use Living Proof products at home, which are pricey, but a little goes a long way. I think it averages out to about the same as a more elaborate set of salon visits in a year. All I do is wash, condition, and air dry.

    Haircuts: $60 + $20 tip, 2 Times a year = $160

    Products: $25 each shampoo, conditioner, and leave-in conditioner, 6 times a year = $450

I don't think that is bad at all! I have personally spent way more than I would like to admit, so I definitely don't think that is unreasonable...

Girl. I don't think this expensive at all! Even though you guys are trying to find ways to cut down sometimes you need to keep the little things. If for you, that's getting your hair done, then do it! Hair is def important. Especially to me it is. I hate when my roots grow out too far!

Hair cut every 3-4 months and the most recent place I went to was $55 before tip. I was going to a beauty school that was $20 because my friend was going through the program, but she moved and it's too far for me without a good reason (not that $35 isn't a good reason).

If you're looking to keep the same routine but go a less expensive route, I would research if there are any of those in your area. Mine was only hair (no eyebrow waxing), but it might depend on the school
