What do you consider "immediate family"?

Future Mrs., on May 6, 2013 at 6:12 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 37

Hello All,

May sound like a ridiculous question, but what do you think of when you hear "immediate family"? I know that by many definitions, it is your parents, siblings, grandparents, children, and spouse. But, whenever I say immediately family, I also think of my aunts, uncles, and first cousins. Sounds random, but I have a reason for asking. :-)

I also think of aunts, uncles and first cousins (and their husbands/wives if they have them)... but nothing beyond that (like children of first cousins don't count).

I'm sure I'd probably also count great-grandparents if any are still alive.

I also think of aunts, uncles, and first cousins but we are also close with all of them. I think they aren't included though if you want to be technical.

I think of parents, children, siblings, and spouses - I didn't even think of grandparents as "immediate" family...

Also it probably depends on the number of first cousins you have and how close you are.

I am the oldest and my brother is the youngest of 8 cousins on my mom's side and we are all really close. We grew up together.

The rest of my cousins are all older and have grown up across the country- two of them I haven't seen in years and have only met them a handful of times in my life.

I could never imagine doing things without my cousins on my mom's side though...

I think it depends on the family. My mom side I would consider aunts and cousins but not my dads side. Generally though your family unit.

I have an F'ed up way of looking at it because I personally think of my parents, brother, one of my cousins and my mothers mother.

But I have two aunts, two uncles and four other cousins, that I don't think of the when it comes to 'immediate'.

    Does depend on the family.

but in my family immediate family is my mum dad grandparents siblings niece nephews sibs partners aunts uncles and first cousins. which as I have 51 first cousins means I have a massive immediate family.

for FH though his immediate family is parents grandparents and sibs. he is very close to one aunt especially and 2 cousins (grew up together) but be wouldn't count them as immediate family.

My parents, siblings, and grandmother. And one specific set of aunt/uncle/first cousins.

The people in my house. Anyone else would be extended family.

    Parents, siblings, grandparents (maybe).

I also include 1 cousin and 1 aunt because I grew up with them and consider my cousin to be like a sister and I'm very close to my aunt.

I usually just classify it as grandparents, parents, siblings, and spouses. I'm close with my aunts uncles and first cousins but when I speak of immediate family I only mean the three I stated above.

To me my immediate family is my FH, our parents, grandparents, and select aunts and uncles. We are both only children and are very close to our Aunts & Uncles

I'd be with MJ, the people in my house (or that I shared a house with, since I'm now grown.)

For a wedding, I'd extend that out to grandparents, but even then, I'd consider my grandfather before my grandmother for a tiny guest list.

At largest, I'd consider parents, siblings, grandparents, first aunts/uncles (as opposed to my great aunts) and first cousins only. But that would really be stretching it.

Parents, grandparents, siblings....spouses to those listed. Also, if your siblings have children they would be included.
