What are your views on having a wedding cake vs. Cupcakes?

My FH and I were debating about whether or not to get a traditional three tiered wedding cake vs having one tier for us to cut and having cupcakes for our guests, because I've heard the wedding cake usually gets wasted because there's a lot left over. Thoughts?

My FH and I just had a disagreement about this. I personally think we should have a small tiered cake for us to cut, and cupcakes to serve. It seems like it would be less wasteful to me as any uneaten cupcakes will just need to be packaged up and sent home with either ourselves or our guests. But if someone is cut a slice of cake, and served it then the facility would probably throw that out! However, my FH (who doesn't even really like or eat cake) thinks people will think it is a cop out and cheap looking and wants a huge tiered wedding cake!

We cannot agree on this! its so silly because the only difference between a cupcake and a cake is the way its shaped and presented to you! lol

I think cupcakes are fine. Like PP we are having a small cake for us to cut and cupcakes for the guests. This fits our budget and it's in line with our crowd which are not huge cake eaters. We are also having a dessert - s'mores bar so there's plenty of sweets to go around.

We're having cupcakes because we're having 6 flavors -- plus some vegan ones for people with food issues (egg allergies).

We're also having a small cake to cut.

And I dunno, I've had some amazing wedding cupcakes...and amazing wedding cake...and some really awful sawdust cake too.

You probably get a split decision on this one. Just have what you want. If you're concerned about budget, price out options.

If you're that concerned about waste, then don't get a cake just to cut. Frankly, desserts never go to waste as your venue will pack up your dessert for you.

We are not having a cake at all. We're doing a killer dessert table: 2 types of donuts, 4 types of cookies, eclairs, cream puffs, variety of pies and for those who love cake, 2 types of cupcakes.

Although cupcakes tend to be just as expensive as a simple tiered cake (more extravagant cakes can add more cost) I like the practicality of cupcakes. No one has to cut them so normally no cake cutting fee, you don't have to wait for a slice so people can grab one and go. Many people still use a fork and knife so they aren't that messy. The variety of flavors is exponential and I find cupcakes lighter most of the time. A three tiered or bigger cake requires more dense cake so it doesn't fall apart. I also hate fondant with a passion, why pay hundreds of dollars for a cake that everyone is just going to pick apart to eat. I don't know what kids birthday party has this display but I would definitely go.

We're doing a small cake for cutting and a dessert bar. I have the same fears (guests won't eat the cake). Also, my FH doesn't like most cakes. Dessert bars may end up being less expensive. Our favors will be boxes to take desserts home.

I love the look of a tiered wedding cake, so we opted for that. I am considering the cake to be part of the decor, so it will be a focal point at our reception.

We are doing a naked wedding cake ( I LOVE them) that feeds around 70 (with us saving the top.) And, we are doing 4 dozen assorted cupcakes. We didn't want to do a bigger cake, and we thought that the assorted cupcakes would be great for people who wanted something other than vanilla cake!

We are having a tiered cake and cupcakes, as well. We will serve the cake to everyone after dinner, and let guests grab cupcakes as they please. We originally only wanted the cake but our baker makes some amazing cupcakes in all kinds of flavors. We thought they would be a fun addition.

I like cupcakes and while I wouldn't necessarily complain about them or anything, I do agree with @Desert. The cupcakes I see usually have wayyyyy too much frosting.

We did a 2 tier cake, (I wanted to save the top tier for our 1 year) and cupcakes. They sliced the bottom tier and put it on the cake table so people could choose slice of cake or cupcakes. We ordered more then number of guests. at the end of the night we had 5 cupcakes leftover and multiple slices of cake. Our guests seem to enjoy the choice of flavors (6 flavors altogether). Or maybe it was just my husband eating them all, I found him a few times sitting at our table eating a cupcake. I think if you want multiple flavors do cupcakes just chocolate and vanilla do a cake.

I was at a wedding a few years back where they had a small cake for them to cut, but they also had cupcakes, as favors! They were in small individual boxes with a thank you note attached to them, and placed at each persons spot! I LOVED THEM! I love cake, but also love cupcakes, and it was great because I could take mine home, or eat it there. And there wasn't much waste because each person only got one! Creative, saving, and the boxes added more to the tables so they didn't look empty! I'm thinking about doing this for my wedding!

Cupcakes are fine for a casual bash, but once you're in the cocktail-attire, plated-dinner echelon of event, go with full-fledged cake. You wouldn't get a cupcake for dessert at a jacket/tie-required restaurant.
