What are your views on having a wedding cake vs. Cupcakes?

My FH and I were debating about whether or not to get a traditional three tiered wedding cake vs having one tier for us to cut and having cupcakes for our guests, because I've heard the wedding cake usually gets wasted because there's a lot left over. Thoughts?

IMO, a large cake is beautiful and brings such a wow factor to the reception! Cupcakes are yummy too though so I don't think you can go wrong with either choice.

I don't love them in place of cake. They are harder to eat and not as elegant.

I like cupcakes because it allows for variety. I am also the guest that will pass on a piece of cake I do not like resulting in waste.

We're doing cupcakes. The bakery we're using offers a deal (buy 12 get 6 free). We're ordering 10 dozen (for 100 people). The cupcakes are MUCH bigger than the average cupcake and they are delicious! Sadly, I am there twice a week buying cupcakes...LOL

For the 10 dozen cupcakes, it's around $250 (tax and delivery included). A cake for 100 people will cost close to $400....so we went with the cupcakes.

I feel cupcakes are more for parties and not a wedding reception. How often will you get to have and serve a three or more tiered cake? I love cake so I'm very biased on this

We are doing a small cake to do the traditional cutting but neither one of us like cake so we are having a cookie bar instead of a huge cake.

It depends on your guests really are they cake eaters? We had a four tier cake 12", 10", 8",6",4" a seperate 10" grooms cake, and a wee 6" birthday ( for my cousin), most of the cake was eaten, what wasn't was taken home by relatives the next day and didn't last long! I kept having to ask the hotel to put more cake out. But my family love thier cake!!

I'm doing pies so my opinion may be invalid but I see zero difference between cake and cupcakes. Cupcakes are just mini cakes and people are fooling themselves if they somehow think cake is more elegant or wedding-y. It's the same freaking thing so have what you prefer.

I think cake is more for a wedding and cupcakes are more for a birthday party.

    I would prefer cake.

I did a small cake for us to cut then sheet cakes for the guests. They were easier to cut.

Cupcakes were a huge hit at my wedding. We didn't do a separate cake for cutting.

I don't know the symbolism for cake-cutting, but you two can probably just use cupcakes for the "feeding each other" part.

ETA: I ate my cupcake with a fork, because despite what people think, this is something possible to keep it as "clean" as cake to eat.

And all those who are saying cupcakes are more bday party, I've never had cupcakes at a bday party but I have had plenty of CAKE.( which doesn't really matter because they're the same thing)

We are having cupcakes plus a small cake for cutting. Our families aren't into sweets too much so we thought a big wedding cake would go to waste

I think cupcakes are fine. I've seen lively stands for them that look gorgeous and elegant. I would be happy with either as a guest. We are doing a cake just because I personally love the look of 3 tier cakes and I have my design that I'm crazy over. Idk if l will be able to let them cut it or cry forever when they do.

I prefer cake, it's the one time in your life you can have a big beautiful wedding cake. You can have cupcakes any day.

Neither of us are huge cake people ; therefore, we are having a small cake for cutting and cupcakes.
