What are You Skipping? (20/21 Edition)

A.B., on March 9, 2020 at 10:03 PM Posted in Planning 2 20

Hello Everyone,

I know this topic already exists in a of old threads but I'd like to revive the conversation. I'm planning to skip a lot of things in order to save money and to save time on the day of (which saves $$ Smiley winking ). So what are you skipping or reducing and why? Also, anything big that you AREN'T skimping on?

I'll start.

Skipping:

*Garter & Bouquet Toss

*DOC

*Non-cake deserts

*Save the Dates

*Send Off

*Fancy bridal party introductions and jigs walking in (I loved being a bridesmaid but these were super awkward for me!)

*Programs

*Guestbook and favors are up in the air, leaning no on guestbook and maybe on favors

*Receiving line

Reducing:

*Time - Ceremony will be 30 min, reception/cocktail hour 4.5 hours

*Invitations will be paper but RVSP will be by phone/website

*Bar will be beer, wine and nonalcoholic drinks - 4 hour open bar for these beverages though. Last call a half hour before we pack-up.

*Flowers - will be minimal bouquets (maybe sola) with a few blooms each and greenery or all greenery

*Decor - center pieces will be greenery, candles and table numbers. Venue has string lights already - I may add a few. Considering skipping an arch (they're so expensive and renting with logistics is more of a headache then buying and close in cost).

*Signage - I'll have a poster seating chart and maybe a welcome sign. It's the sign stands that are holding me up as they cost so much. I found really great deals for custom signage that could really spruce things up but they need stands and frames! Smiley atonished

*Menu - will only be a small sign that lists the beer and wine options set up at the bar, hopefully to reduce time waiting while the bartender lists the options.

*Cake - going to focus on flavor and just have a plain white tiered cake with an inexpensive topper

*Guest list - mostly family. We each are inviting 3-4 friends (mine are all in the bridal party haha!)

*Toasts - keeping them to a few during dinner and advising our speech givers to keep it short (they'll be grateful for that I think!)

Not skipping/skimping:

*Food - will have a salad and plated meal and if we do a cocktail hour, trays of appetizers.

*Music - will have a DJ going from ceremony through-out the reception (and play some ambient music while he eats of course - not starving the vendors!)

*Photography - I got a good deal but it's still a lot! (second only to food and drinks!)

*We'll have a first dance and a cake cutting where we'll say a brief thank-you.

*Dress - I'm spending nearly $500 on a dress. I know for some that's a steal but for me, it's ridiculously lavish. Still, I really want it.

So what are you all skipping, reducing and going all out on? There's still a few things I'm debating on - would love suggestions. Smiley heart

We are skipping the money dance, I feel weird asking people for money.

Thinking about skipping a cookie bar for the end of the night? Unsure on this one.

We did skip programs, and unsure on wedding favors. (i feel like most people unless its a food item doesn't keep anything they get from weddings) I know the weddings i went to, i didn't want to keep something with someone else name plastered all over it.

Skipping DJ, Cake, first looks, wedding video, garter toss/bouquet toss, big send off, fancy transportation to or from venue, bar/alcohol (it's a morning/breakfast wedding 11am ceremomy) , no ring bearer. Reducing reception time 12:30ish to 3 or 3:30ish, photography is 4 hours. Not skimping on food or decor! We have tons of yummy breakfast food including a pancake station and we have so many cute details!

Oh goodness, I’m skipping a ton when I think about it 😂. I’m skipping: alcohol, dancing (I know- but our church venue doesn’t allow it), menus, assigned sitting, DOC, programs, wedding party introductions, real flower centerpieces (I couldn’t justify the cost of them!), ring bearer, flower girl, a DJ (again no dancing so then a DJ wouldn’t be worth it...) and favors.

Skipping: bouquet/garter toss, save the dates, send off, any first/parent dances, recieving line, favors (but doing welcome bags for hotel), formal intros, possibly a DJ, flower girl, ring bearer, menus, programs...

We're probably adding a fun "how well do you know the bride/groom?" game since it'll be an intimate wedding. 😊

Also will be ordering in flowers at local flower market then arranging ourselves. Did it for my brother's wedding and it was fun!

    Skipping:

*Programs- it's a short ceremony.*Champagne toast- I don't remember liking any champagne from weddings and I do remember hating some, people can toast with whatever they're drinking.*Calligrapher- I've been following a calligraphy blog for years, and now I can use it for our invitations!*Arch- at the end of the aisle, I'll be in a long white dress and my fiancè will be in a tux. People don't need flowers to tell them where to look.*Getting ready photos- it's nice to look at these because it's nice to look at wedding pictures, but if you think about it, it's kind of weird to watch people get dressed in slow motion, which is really what's happening in them.(I don't mean to offend to anyone who did or is doing this.)*Transportation- our ceremony at reception are at the same place, most guests are local, and the hotel block is less than a mile away.
Does this count?*We're doing a poster instead of escort cards which may/may not save paper and/or money.*Favors=donuts.
    Not skimping:*Photographer*Florist*DJ*Dress/shoes/hair & makeup
*We have a beautiful venue that includes (and by includes I mean we pay them for) food and all rentals.
