Wedding Welcome Bags / What did you put in them? How much did you spend? Where did you get them from?? 1
Hi ladies,

We got married in the UK recently and I wanted to do welcome bags as all guests were coming from the US (including us, the B&G). This turned out to be a tremendous undertaking with so many variables, given us not being there until 5 days prior to the wedding. As a result, I paid our wedding coordinator to accept deliveries for the items, assemble them all, do name tags and deliver them to each hotel (we had asked for each guest/couple to provide their selected hotel on the rsvp). Most people LOVED the bags, but my dad was indifferent (that’s men for you!).
For those who chose/are choosing not to do welcome bags, what was the reasoning? Was it cost related (and did you rule them out before doing research)? Or did you just not think it was necessary/don’t care for them?
Bag details:Contents -- local chocolate bar- local seasoning mix (to bring local flavor home)- local dried cheese crisps- under eye gel masks- ear plugs- hand sanitizer - rehydrate powder- mini whisky bottles- welcome letter with wedding events schedule, local things to do and see, restaurants nearby, etc.- gold bags - black ribbons- name tagsThe photo does not depict just how big the bags were though! I had 4 pieces of tissue paper per bag, and they used it on the bottle so that the contents wouldn’t rattle around. I should have bought more of that, but thought that it would be enough. The bags were so big because I was worried about fitting everything in them! It worked out fine, but planning everything on the internet made it difficult without being able to see them prior and make changes.
Cost -I ended up spending over $30 a bag because it was last minute (although buying in bulk saved me a lot!). This does not include the coordinators fee for services and delivery!
Where I bought the contents from -- variety of local stores with online purchasing- online pharmacy- Amazon (I was really trying to avoid Amazon, but time constraints and not trusting Etsy [I've had too many fraud experiences on there], really limited my options. I just didn’t have the time to wait for fulfillment/shipping at some small stores with stuff I would have liked to have used. The UK also doesn’t seem to have caught on to the welcome bags theme. I really struggled to find a one stop shop for the generic items that go into welcome bags (the non-local stuff).
I am wanting to know what the experience was like for other brides when buying bag contents from here instead. My friend is getting married and is asking me questions about our bags, but other than suggestions of contents, I can’t give her other info about sourcing in the US. Has anyone found a one stop shop where you can source welcome boxes and contents? I am not talking about the pre-made boxes on Etsy, unless they are truly customizable (like where you can add more stuff in the box/bag).
Thanks so much! I look forward to hearing your answers and where you went with your bag ideas! Sorry for the long post!!!
Smiley smile

Sounds like you put together some really cool welcome bags! Awesome that your wedding coordinator was able to help you out with assembling and delivering them too.

My husband and I had put together hotel welcome bags for our wedding as well! We included snacks, water bottles, sunglasses, a deck of playing cards, a mini first aid kit, a hotel door Do Not Disturb sign, a map of the area, and a welcome note from us. We purchased items in bulk from Oriental Trading Company, Amazon, and Etsy, as well as our local grocery store. Oriental Trading Company was especially where we found most of the items. We got the maps for free from the town we got married in. We printed the welcome notes ourselves. I think total, it cost us less than $7/bag. Here is my post with photos/details if you want more information: https://www.weddingwire.com/wedding-forums/hotel-welcome-bags/f30c4eacf60be88d.html

    Hi Lisa,
Thanks for your response! The sunglasses was a great idea!! I love that! Did you know about Oriental Trading beforehand, or did it come up when you searched? I know the company, but had no idea they had stuff for welcome bags (I thought it was decorations and candy!). You had a MUCH better time at keeping costs down - how long in advance did you order everything? I am very impressed with how much value you got!! I had no idea of costs when I did my bags, and especially doing the overseas sourcing made it more expensive. Would you recommend diy since you just went through it? How many bags did you do? Sorry for all the questions, it will help with my friends search, she’s doing destination as well, but in the US. I told her that I think welcome bags are more impactful than wedding favors in this case - but that’s personal opinion!!
Also, I looked, and you got married a few days after we did! We were meant to have our wedding on July 20 of 2020, but also had to wait until 2022!! Congratulations to you both!

I found Oriental Trading Company around the same time I joined these forums! I can't remember if I learned about them through here or through an advertisement on Facebook, but I saved a ton of money by purchasing in bulk through them. Our original date was July 2020, and I purchased most of the items (sunglasses, decks of cards, bags) around 2 months in advance of that date. It took around 1-2 weeks for everything to arrive. A lot of the items were less than $1 each when buying in bulk, and I bought enough stuff to put together 24 welcome bags, though we only needed 18 bags. Around 6 weeks before our original date, we postponed to July 2022, so I just held onto everything (except food items and first aid items that would expire before then) until our new date got closer.

As far a whether I recommend DIY, these were easy enough to put together and they didn't take much time at all, so I would definitely recommend it as long as you are willing to spend the time comparing prices! I ended up saving quite a bit of money by shopping around and buying things from different places instead of buying them all through the same place. Some things I found cheapest on Amazon, others were cheapest in the travel/trial section of our grocery store, and the rest cheapest in bulk on Oriental Trading Company. I absolutely agree that welcome bags are more impactful than favors. We got so many comments from our guests about how the welcome bags were a nice touch, and how the items inside were useful and fun, so these seemed to be much more popular than our favors (which were chocolate covered cherries).

Congratulations to you both as well!! Sorry that you had to postpone from 2020 to 2022, but hopefully you also found it to be worth it wait. So exciting that you were able to finally have your wedding day!

Hi Ruby. Our welcome bags were a hit, as we received compliments from guests.
I bought the bags and contents from Amazon, although I try not to buy a ton of stuff from there, but they sell the items in bulk packs of 12, 40, etc.
I made 25 bags and they cost less than $10 per bag. I had a few extras that were given to hotel staff. I made the note and printed it on thick paper on my printer.

Interesting, I will have to make note of this for reference! Definitely some smart buys and research on your part. I knew of Oriental Trading but I don’t think they ship to the UK so it wouldn’t have been useful in my case anyway, but will be for my friend!
I did the same, but held on to bridesmaid stuff for the two years (and of course my dress and shoes, etc).

Good to know that a little effort and research will save lots of money. I am just still super impressed by your cost per bag!! We did cheese boxes (Brie, cheddar and Gouda with crackers and dried fruits) for favors (as we were all going back to the same hotels, and would be needing a snack in the morning - it saved me and my husband when we woke up and gave us the strength to get through the shower). They were good too, but everyone was drunk and I don’t think everyone grabbed them at the end of the night. Welcome boxes just make more sense to me!
Thank you so very much, it was an absolute dream and I feel very blessed to have shared it with our friends and family!

    Hi Shannon,

Your bags look lovely, and cover everything a guest could need for a wedding! Great price point too! How nice that you thought of the staff, I’m sure that made them want to provide even better service to your group. I do understand that with Amazon, it is quick and reliable. Printing your own note was smart too. All very helpful tips. Thank you so much!
On another note, I am beginning to feel like I paid wayyy too much for my bags…it’s good to know that my friend will be able to get a better deal.

Thanks Ruby. You also had more unique and expensive items in your bags and paid to have them assembled and distributed. I’m sure they were lovely.

I think it’s all the thought of your guests in the end. It all has a similar impact. I would have DIYed if I could have, but it worked out. Thanks again for your input! Smiley smile
