Wedding Things You Think Are Silly

Victoria and Ralph, on March 6, 2014 at 3:00 PM

So what "typical" wedding things do you think are silly or pointless? Or, someone please explain why you think these things are important- I'd love to hear your thoughts on them all! I'll start with mine- Wearing a garter (I'm not doing the garter toss) Inviting OOT guests to the rehearsal dinner...

I'll start with mine-

Wearing a garter (I'm not doing the garter toss)

Inviting OOT guests to the rehearsal dinner (have a second wedding? sure I can afford that...)

Buying specific forks/cutter/server for cake (I just don't understand why)

Jennifer - SO MUCH. I think it's best to stick with age four and up. Any earlier and they're going to freak out. While the bride might think it's adorable to drag a toddler around in a wagon, the toddler is most likely terrified, or at least confused.

"It's a chair, the satin bag over it isn't fooling anyone"

Wait - so that was a chair? I thought it was a bridal gown that I was allowed to plunk my butt onto.

@Lizz - my venue has an upcharge for "Chiavari chairs" because they say they are prettier and more comfortable. If my guests are staring at the chairs, or sitting all night instead of dancing, our problems will be bigger than the chairs.

Shannon, I totally agree about slideshows! I've seen them on during toasts and the first dance- TOTALLY distracting! I guess that's cool if you don't want any attention on your wedding day...

I do see how a seating chart can work or not work. I'm having about 200 people at my wedding, and the thought of 200 people swarming to tables with no direction (or my great aunt getting stuck at a table with my college friends) is enough to make me want to cry. That being said, I won't be assigning specific seats to them- just the tables. I can see how no seating chart can work for a smaller wedding, but for me that isn't an option.

@Shannon - great point about the bridal showers!! That is exactly why I am not having one, I am already sick of the fact that my FMIL gives us too many kitchen gadgets every single holiday!

Dollar dance (despise) chair covers (can't afford, and even if we could...no).

I personally want a fancy cake cutter Smiley smile

@winnipegwriter-I so agree about the unity ceremony. Even though a sand ceremony is included in our package, I'm skipping it. Like I need something else to collect dust in our house!

I'm also not a big fan of bouquet and garter belt tosses, thinking we aren't going to do that on either!

-Champagne Toasts. Approximately 4.3 people actually LIKE to drink champagne. So you buy a bunch of champagne for people to take a courtesy sip, then the rest sits on the table until it is picked up by the staff and dumped. Just toast with whatever's in your glass!

-Gifts for your bride or groom. Um, your gift is ME for the rest of our lives!

-Chair covers. What an epic waste of money.

I agree with the slideshow thing! In my opinion, the only people who care to see the photos (parents, aunt, grandparents) have already seen them all.

Destination weddings. Really no one wants to spend their vacation and hard earned money to watch you get married on a beach somewhere.

Victoria, I was in a wedding that had us stand around and watch the first dance, father-daughter dance, and mother-son. Then we were able to go to our tables. At which point, there were multiple toasts and a blessing. Then, just when we thought we could eat, TEN MINUTE SLIDESHOW. Followed by my table being the last one called to the buffet, even though I was a bridesmaid. My friends and I still refer to it as the Starvation Wedding. Too much performance stuff is tedious for guests - especially if you don't feed them!

August - Yep, showers are very boring unless you have a boring enough life that you get a thrill from toasters and awkward chitchat.

UNITY CEREMONY - aren't vows uniting enough. AND, these are getting more and more ridiculous with people trying to be more and more creative (lighting one candle from 2 is suddenly not enough anymore - we have trees, sand, wine, and God knows what else). OVER IT ALL

    Multiple speeches and toasts

    personalized favors

Trashy wedding dresses. Trashy does not equal sexy.

I would love a really fancy flute set that I could later pass on to my daughter to throw away

I kind of like the slideshow... We're just playing ours in the background (no extra music or anything) so people can watch if they want or ignore and socialize. I also like seating charts... I would feel so awkward trying to claim my territory...

We're doing chair covers. Hate away Smiley smile

I don't like super young RB/FG or unity ceremonies either.

OK - Number one reason why chair covers are bad - Your college friends and your uncles will get drunk, remove them, and place the white sheets with pointed ends for the legs on their heads. Then, in the hilarity numerous photos will be taken of them in black and white and sepia by the photographer. Then, when these are printed, everyone will wonder why there are Klansmen at your wedding and it will become the family joke for the rest of your lives. And yes, this happened at a good friends wedding about 6 years ago and it is the NUMBER ONE thing people remember about the whole wedding.

I got champagne flutes cheap, and then was just going to use the venues server and knife. But then I went to register for a cake server (because it's just easier to get my 10 lbs cheesecake out with one and we never had one) and the first thing that popped up matched our flutes... So I just bought them on ebay!

Anyway... I hate chair covers, dollar dance, super long toasts/skits/slideshows. I also think bridal party/family introductions are awkward. We debated it and decided that they'll just introduce us, go right into first dance, have a single toast by the best man, and we're done! We don't want all that stuff eating into party time!
