Wedding Things You Think Are Silly

Victoria and Ralph, on March 6, 2014 at 3:00 PM

So what "typical" wedding things do you think are silly or pointless? Or, someone please explain why you think these things are important- I'd love to hear your thoughts on them all! I'll start with mine- Wearing a garter (I'm not doing the garter toss) Inviting OOT guests to the rehearsal dinner...

I'll start with mine-

Wearing a garter (I'm not doing the garter toss)

Inviting OOT guests to the rehearsal dinner (have a second wedding? sure I can afford that...)

Buying specific forks/cutter/server for cake (I just don't understand why)

    I've got a few...

    1. Programs, they will just get thrown away.

    2. Seating chart, not doing it and I could give a rats ass who cares.

    3. Cake smashing. I don't want that shit on my face.

    4. Spending money on someone to do calligraphy on your invite envelopes. People rip it open and throw it away. They aren't going to oh and ah over it.

    5. Removal and toss of the garter. My grandma doesn't want to see FH go up my dress.

    6. Tossing of the bouquet. Old tradition that I could care less about.

    Unity candle, sand, etc.

    Any form of dollar dance.

Even though I'll be wearing one and carrying one, garter and bouquet tosses seem stupid.

    Parent dances.

    - Bouquet and garter toss

    - White dress for brides

    - Requiring wedding party members to wear a particular suit or dress (or shoes or jewelry or hair or make-up or nails)

    - Buying cake cutting implements/toasting flutes for the wedding

    - Chair covers and sashes

    - Head table

    - Bridal shower

    - Couple not seeing each other before the ceremony

    - Wedding party introductions (like, parents, maid of honor, best man, etc)

    - Most decor, especially giant centerpieces or ones that are more complicated than a vase with some flowers

Shannon, only if you have 700 of your closest friends in the world. And we can pass the rings around. On a beach.

I'm having chair covers only because it comes with my venue, along with the champagne toast. I could do without but it wouldn't have changed the price at all so why not? I'm also having the garter/bouquet toss. I personally like it. Smiley smile Having a bridal shower because FH and I are military and it's been 6 years since I was home for more than 2 weeks so it gives us time to see everyone at once (FH is going with, he'd be bored and didn't meet half my family)

Not having a cake cutting song nor a toasting flute set nor special cake cutting utensils. Having cupcakes instead so there's no need for that. I don't see the point in 2 dresses but if you have the money for it, by all means, spend away.

Oh, I also immediately showed FH a picture of me in my dress when I got back from the bridal shop. I wanted to make sure he loved it as much as I did!

"Satin bag isn't fooling anyone"....seriously..my boss gave me a funny look because I was stiffling uncontrollable laughter.

I love chair covers...though I think it's stupid they charge for them.

Things I hate: STDs, candy bar, no music when the bride is entering, children too young to be in the WP and super long toasts.

The entrance songs at the reception.

Smashing the cake in each others faces played out.

I don't like veils that cover the face kind of old fashioned.

I am so over candy bars! I have seen so many weddings where they go completely untouched!

Well I've never understood why anyone actually needs a rehearsal dinner...

Why not save your energy for the wedding/reception the next day?

If FH smashes cake all over my expensive make up job there's going to be big trouble!

Jemma- I totally agree! I have told FH that he better not ruin my makeup or my dress, because I'm paying a lot of money for those!

Candle lighting, pouring sand, and other "unity" ceremonies...Isn't getting MARRIED "unity" enough? If you not united by the time you say "I do"...Pouring some colored sand into a glass jar isn't going to change much...IMHO

    LMAO!!!

I am laughing at all of these comments! Sadly, many of these "traditions" were made up for the bride & groom to spend more money. "Proposing" to your bridesmaids, Trash the dress (gotta pay a photographer right?), STDs ....yeah all these things add up.

I still can't get over that post that showed the terrible pictures of the bride lighting her dress on fire and running into the ocean!

    *fixed typo
