Wedding registry gifts as Christmas gifts?

DonnaBelle, on December 23, 2012 at 5:14 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 18

We got our first gifts off of the wedding registry from FH's dad and wife as Christmas gifts. I had not been watching the registry, so I didn't know anything had been purchased. I really didn't think we would get anything until the bridal shower in March. I'm pretty happy about it but FH isn't...maybe because it's baking stuff so it is really something that only I would use (although he eats the baked goods!)

Has anyone else received wedding registry items as holiday gifts? If so, what was you and FH's reaction?

This happened to a friend and they were very upset because the gift was a household item. Christmas gifts are more personal.

Personally, I think it is inappropriate to purchase a gift from a wedding registry and present it on Christmas. FH has every right to be upset. I know I would.

I got NotFroofy some items from our registry as Christmas/birthday gifts, when no one purchased them from our registry. Of course, I was in a position to know which ones were really just for her, and that she really wanted.

Then again, I would never complain about a Christmas gift, personal or not. I'd be happy about the fact that they thought of you and bought something they had reason to believe you both wanted.

I got gift cards to buy our toasting glasses and cake cutter. I asked for wedding stuff so I was happy. I'm sure FH isnt but I keep trying to tell him anything we don't have to buy is money we can spend on our honeymoon.

How is purchasing from the gift registry inapprorpiate? hahah that's ridiculous! People asked me what I wanted for Christmas and I said anything off our list because those are things we wanted. We made the list so of course we like all of the stuff on it. I think it's silly not to have people buy off of your list, I mean what's it there for if you don't use it. The shower? OK..but what if every item is not purchased then you have to buy those things, why not take advantage and get gifts that you can actually use and not regift Smiley winking

A gift is a gift. I don't really see anything to be upset about.

I mean, I can understand your FH kinda thinking it's more of a gift for your and possibly feeling a little slighted -- but he should get over that in about a minute. I'd love to get things from our registry, we still have things left that we REALLY wanted (like filters for our water pitchers, which would be SUPER useful), so if we got those I'd be hella happy.

That said, I've also been quite happy with the Christmas cards we've gotten so far, too, so maybe I have lower expectations.

I was told by the lady at Bed Bath and Beyond that if we registered before Christmas that we would end up with gifts for Christmas off our list. We are waiting til March, but I have heard of this happening.

I see nothing wrong with it at all....the only thing that might pop into my head is what if the wedding is called off.

Other than that....a gift is a gift.

Speaking of I got a crock pot and was ecstatic and so was FH because he knows he will eat something good.

The only reason I might get annoyed is if they gave so many items that it limited the options/price ranges on the shower to the point where I had to go back out and register for more items before the shower to be considerate of all guests and their budgets.

Other than that, I'd be happy getting something I could use instead of who knows what.

I think we always over do our registries so there would never be a lack of options on the registry for when the bridal shower comes Smiley smileUsually you register for over 150 items these days, now if someone gets 150 gifts for Christmas I'd like to meet that family lol. I got about 8 things from our registry and am so happy! There is still plenty for guests to choose.

Lucky Me - good point. I had a small wedding and therefore small registry - it's a lot easier to achieve with a small registry. lol

My family bought us gifts off the registry. We really didn't need or want anything else, so we figured the registry made the most sense since that's stuff we do need and want.

We set up a small registry early specifically so family members would consider them for Christmas gifts. We will be getting an apartment together a few months before the wedding (prior to bridal shower) and we don't have much in the way of dishes, towels, etc. so we were both thrilled to get a lot of items off the registry

My soon to be sister-in-law had a registry and was getting married at the end of January, so for Christmas I got her 2 gifts off her BBB registry! Smiley sad I didn't realize until now it's not a good idea. I got her a corn shucker? and 3 grease splatter protectors. UGH.

My FH family bought me and us Wedding Registry gifts for Christmas and although they were gifts I really wanted from the registry, I still felt left out because I didn't feel they were personal. I felt a little bummed out but I still love my gifts.
