Wedding gifts for in-laws you don't get along with?

Reggie, on August 3, 2015 at 5:35 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10

I have a few ideas for what to get my future in laws but nothing I really LOVE and I was wondering if anyone has any good ideas. My FFIL is the hardest, really. I think the worst part of this is that they dislike me so that makes figuring out something appropriate difficult. So many of the FMIL gifts are things like a necklace engraved with "thank you for raising the man of my dreams" and that is SOOO not an option. They are not warm fuzzy people and if it were up to them we wouldn't be getting married. So far my best option for FMIL is a pair of earrings that look like her favorite flower. For FFIL I saw a tie clip that you could engrave front and back so we could put initials on the front and FOG on the back. Ideally they would be small (we were hoping for things that could be worn at the wedding but NBD) and I don't want to spend more than about $50.

Really I'll take any ideas at this point. Can't hurt. Any thoughts?

I'm kind of in a similar boat. My FMIL has not been a fan of me since day 1. She still refers to me as her daughter's friend and when talking about the wedding she says "That situation you've got going on with Viv." But, she's paying for a few things in the wedding to make FW happy. So, of course, I'm grateful and would like to still get her something. This is not necessarily a peace treaty but, she didn't HAVE to pay for anything so, it wouldn't feel right not to get her something. Problem is....what?

Oh boy, this is a tough one. I think that the idea you mentioned is a good one. You know what would be appropriate better than anyone. If they are more logical than they are emotional and aren't too keen about you two getting married, maybe something like a gift certificate to somewhere you know that they like.

I would just get them a nice frame that they could put a wedding photo in later. Easy peasy.

Alcohol, if they drink. A bottle of wine and perhaps a 2pc glass set (both could be purchased for a total of $50) would be a nice, impersonal gift.

I got my FMIL one of those Willow Tree figurines of a mother and a son. It made it more about FH and his mom.

I think you get them whatever you would like for them to have, and have it be heartfelt if they are too big jerks to realize that, that's on them you can't control their behavior but you can control the way you treat them and the way you react to them... Kill them with kindness, your future spouse will thank you for it. Smiley smile

For FFIL what about an engraved knife? I like the alcohol idea too.

You could get them a nice picture frame with one of your engagement photos.

MY FILs like me so I can't relate there (sorry I can't imagine being in such an awkward situation). I got all the parents and grandparents lay flat photo albums of our engagement pictures (using mixbook). I'll also get them a lay flat photo album of the wedding pictures.
