Wedding dress - add belt or no?

Sara, on February 6, 2013 at 12:54 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 16

I am debating as to whether or not I should wear a belt with my dress. I would add it just below the bustline. Since my dress has an open back, I would have it sewn into the sides of my dress. It would hit the sides at the point where the open back is widest.

The first picture is my dress without a belt. I still need alterations, so the fit isn't quite as nice as I hope it will be. In the second picture, I have one of my belts tied up at the position I would add a belt (obviously not one I would actually wear to the wedding). The third picture is from last summer when I odered the dress and they put one around my waist. I don't think it looks right in this position with the way the lace pattern is.

What do you think? Also what kind of belt (see follow-up posts)

Would I do a brooch like belt (1st picture) or a beaded belt like the second picture? I like the second one better, but a lot of dresses I see with belts/embellishments up by the bust have something a bit more like the brooch style.

The 3rd picture is a brooch I saw on etsy for $7.25 that I really like.

Yes i would add a belt, it's a lovely dress. Depends on your wedding for what type, i would have a bling personally, or something in your wedding colours

One of my coworkers said that a belt would clash with my necklace. 1st pic is my necklace, second is my headband. I will also have earrings that are pearl studs FH bought me for Christmas (he says it can be my something new, so sweet!)

The 3rd picture is the back of my dress. This was taken with me in the sample, which was a bit small so it isn't zipped up all the way. I am now 15 pounds lighter, but I don't have a good picture of the back of my dress all zipped up.

So opinions on belt? Yes or no? If yes, what type??

I think the 3rd broch would look very pretty with your dress just under the bust.

Now that I see the back, I actually think a belt would clash with the opening.

I was going to say no belt until I saw those beautiful peices. If your wearing it under the bustline then go with the beaded look, if your going w/the waistline definately do the brooch look. Either way it'll be a beautiful addition.

I wouldn't tie the belt around the back but have it attched to the dress at the side - the widest part of the opening which is under my arms in the picture since that dress is a size too small.

I say YES! the dress is beautiful, but the addition of the belt i think really sets it off. i also think you right -- with the placement up high it is really flattering on your frame.

i went through the same dilemma -- i loooooooooveeeeed my dress, but really wanted something to make it more one of a kind... so i had a sash made that i still get compliments on to this day! cant wait to see your final choice!!

Love the accesories! I think your coworker is right the broach would clash. I think a beaded all around or plain satin sash would be nice but i would not put it under your bust line. The dress is fitted and you can see your natural waist if it was an empire waist dress then it would go there. I would do the sash at your waist if it can tie below the opening in the back.

I don't like it with a belt but I think that's me. Especially with the open back like that. I think it would take away from the beauty of the lace embellishments.

I love your dress the way it is. Your great jewelry will totally make up for a lack of belt!

I agree with Robin. You don't want to have too much going on. Smiley smile

I think a wider belt with a broach in the middle would really set the dress! I agree with the other ladies though that it might clash with the opening of the back of your dress though. Maybe look into just a wide broach that can sit right under your bust and then you dont have to worry about the belt/sash taking away from the back if it.

Thanks for all the advice! When you say it will clash with the open back, are you saying that because you are thinking I am going to tie it in back? If I were to add a sash below the bust, it would be in the front only. I would have the long ends cut off and sewn into the sides. It would hit at the widest part of the opening in the back.

Reading all of the above responses, I am happy reading the responses that tell me to do it and I find myself disagreeing with those of you telling me no. That means that I am probably going to add a belt. I am still very much undecided on what kind of belt.
