Wedding Cake.. how many tastings did you try?

Ty, on November 20, 2020 at 9:26 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 1 35
Hello!

So my FH and I did our first cake tasting yesterday. We tried vanilla w/dulce de leche, red velvet, lemon, guava, and chocolate.
She charged a $50 tasting fee which is applied to our final price if we go with her. We also took the cake to my FH family as a second opinion so they could try as well and everyone enjoyed it, and rated a 8/10. My future mom in law thinks we can find better, but the next baker is charging $350 more than the first one.
I am thinking we just go with her and be done, because who really cares about the taste of the wedding cake at the wedding anyways.. and him and I aren’t big cake people anyways.
Keep in mind, we are having appetizers (6), salad, dinner (dual plating chicken and fish), the cake as a dessert, and a full open bar.
Let me know your thoughts??

Many people love cake. If it's not your thing, don't spend any more time on tastings. Get a different dessert entirely. No cake is always better than bad cake.

If you guys liked it, why not be done with it? We planned to do two tastings but the first one turned out great so we just went with them to be done and move on.

We had cake tastings with two different bakers. We were originally scheduled with a third, but we loved the second one so much that we booked him on the spot and cancelled the third tasting session.

My fiance and I ended up doing tastings at two different cake bakeries and found the one we wanted to go with. If you are happy with the ones you tasted, I say go for it! If you weren't a fan of them, then I would do another tasting elsewhere. I agree with a previous comment as well - maybe consider a different dessert if you don't like cake? You could do ice cream, or tiramisu, or cupcakes, or cheesecake, etc.

    Thank you!

The cake was good, just not the best cake I ever had. I think we will just try one more. Smiley smile

I personally think, if the cake is being served at the wedding where there was an open bar, then you don’t have to worry about 10/10 mark on your cake 😅

I love cheesecake, yum! Thanks for the idea, honestly I care about the look of the cake and having the tradition of cutting it.

The cake was good, I’m currently eating leftovers of it, i just feel silly for not trying to find a cake that’s a 10! But does that really matter?

Thank you! That’s what I think too! Smiley smile

I mean all of it is gone, except for the piece I’m currently indulging in, so it can’t be that bad. lol

Thanks! Yes, it was good, just not a 10/10. I’m eating leftovers of it now, I like it, I’m just wondering should we be looking for 10/10?

That’s what we did with the caterer. The food was amazing, this cake was cold when we initially had it so it was WAY better the next day when it thawed out, so now I have mixed feelings about it.

But the baker did confirm that she took it out the refrigerator right before delivering it, and that the wedding cake couldn’t be cold.

You’re right. The cake wasn’t bad though, just not a 10/10. I’m eating the remainder of it now.

That makes sense! My fiance and I are getting a small cake just for the cake cutting tradition, but we plan on serving tiramisu as dessert to our guests.

If you think the cake tastes good enough, then that's all that matters!

Don't spend money on anything unless it blows you away with how good it is. If the cake for the tasting is just so-so, that's indicative of what you receive on your wedding day. Either look elsewhere until you are happy or serve an alternative. Not everyone drinks either so don't rely on that to cover for bad food/dessert.

We did not do any cake tasting. The appearance of the cake was quite important for us and luckily, the cake was fabulous for both look and taste! Also, we are vegan, so 1 tier was vegan, 1 tier vanilla with buttercream, and another tier carrot cake. I would look at their portfolio as well to make sure they’re capable of your design or show them an inspiration photo. I am still in love with our cake and don’t think you should settle 🤍
