Hello!

So my FH and I did our first cake tasting yesterday. We tried vanilla w/dulce de leche, red velvet, lemon, guava, and chocolate.
She charged a $50 tasting fee which is applied to our final price if we go with her. We also took the cake to my FH family as a second opinion so they could try as well and everyone enjoyed it, and rated a 8/10. My future mom in law thinks we can find better, but the next baker is charging $350 more than the first one.
I am thinking we just go with her and be done, because who really cares about the taste of the wedding cake at the wedding anyways.. and him and I aren’t big cake people anyways.
Keep in mind, we are having appetizers (6), salad, dinner (dual plating chicken and fish), the cake as a dessert, and a full open bar.
Let me know your thoughts??

Lucky! Sounds like a great experience.

Her portfolio is amazing and she has done similar cakes to mine in the past, she is professional, thorough, and explained to me in great detail how she will execute the cake on the day.
Her work is amazing and I know she can execute the cake. I don’t feel like I’m settling with an 8/10, but are we selling ourselves short by not trying others?

I have pretty high expectations and would want a 9/10 at minimum. We personally would try another, but I think it’s most important for the two of you to decide! 🤍

Go with what YOU want, not what your future mother-in-law dictates. It can be very expensive once you start trying to live up to standards that someone else imposes on you. My own mother had to be chilled out more than a few times because her taste in everything is way more expensive than mine. That cake you described sounds INSANELY delicious, and way better than any bland, boring old wedding cake I've ever had.

I didn’t try any cakes at all. I used a co-worker who makes cakes professionally on the side. I got several word of mouth reviews that were great and looked through her instagram and she does great work. We picked traditional wedding cake cause uh it’s a wedding? The wedding cake cup cake I like to order is good and doesn’t taste like almond. Well I didn’t know wedding cake is almond flavored and she didn’t tell us. It was not good! She did a lovely job with it and we did get compliments but it wasn’t to my liking. I regret our cake.
If you’re second guessing now, I’d check out 1 or 2 others. And it doesn’t have to be the one that charges $350 more. Look for other bakers out there. Even if doing so makes you choose the 1st. At least then you won’t have to second guess.

Thank you. I’m generally an indecisive person, so it’s even more difficult. I’ll keep looking so we can decide on one soon. But I know this baker can deliver, her work is phenomenal! The cake itself just didn’t blow us out if the park, but it was good.

Yes, she is so opinionated and in respect for her FH always wants to please her.

And yes, the different flavors she had us try were good, different, and new so maybe that’s why they weren’t a 10/10. The kids loved it, my friend tried it and loved it, my fh family loved it, just his mom wants to try others.

We haven't done our tasting yet to figure out which flavors we want, but we already know which bakery we're using. It actually came in the package from our venue and happens to be a bakery that I absolutely love! Our tasting is dry for January.

If it's an 8/10 I say go for that one. There's no need to spend $350 more when you're providing all of that other stuff

Is there something specific you didn't like about the cake? Was it dry, too moist, too sweet/not sweet enough, too heavy, etc.? In other words, can you define what would be different to make it a 10/10 rather than an 8/10?

We only did one trial as we knew we wanted the cake from Publix. There was actually a mix up at both of the places we went where we only got small slices instead of the full size cakes I've heard others get.
Unless there is something tangible you didn't like, I would go with the 8/10 if it was more cost effective. But that's just me.

We had 2 scheduled but liked the first one so much, we booked her immediately and cancelled the second tasting.
If you liked the cake and it is a reasonable price, I say book it. 95% of your guests will not care about the cake.

I went to a bridal fair and did half a dozen tastings, and decided against them all! The big bakeries' cakes were dry, overly sweet to my taste, and felt like they were mass produced. I chose a woman who bakes cakes in her home. She had done big birthday cakes for people I knew. She did a small three-layer cake (we only had 60 guests) in almond and chocolate. It cost us $150 and it was beautifully decorated and delicious.

What a steal! Here us what we are considering, with one extra tier and different flavors on each tier.

That's really gorgeous. I love the "flower crowns" on each layer. Is one of your colors white, or would you change them to a different color? I can imagine this style working well with any small, full flower.

My colors are sage, ivory, and champagne(gold).

Honestly, 8/10 for wedding cake is really good. I have been to a ton of weddings and the fancy, expensive cakes tasted like a 4/10 verses the ones made by family or a family friend which were so moist and delicious, 10/10 in my opinion.

We did 2 tastings. We planned to do one, but the vendor couldn't respond to emails or any communication in a timely manner. We ended up finding a different bakery and were so happy with the flavor selections and the quality of the cake. My FH was sold once he knew that bakery did lemon poppy seed. Smiley smile So our 6" cutting cake is lemon poppy seed. We are having a 1/2 sheet cake for the guests that is a cinnamon spice flavor (just a hint of Christmas for our December wedding). And because we aren't huge cake people, we decided to add a couple pies as an option too.

My husband and I knew who we wanted to go with for our cake so we only went to one person. We used the wife of one of my co-workers who owns a bakery and makes amazing cakes. She didn't charge us for our tasting.
