Wearing a wig for the wedding

Shelly, on December 5, 2010 at 7:37 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 36

I had brain surgery 6 weeks ago to remove a mass in my brain that was causing tremors and seizures. As a result my head was completely shaved. The surgery was a last minute thing that was scheduled because my doctors feared that I had cancer. I'm recovering well. I'm planning to wear a wig for the wedding. I'm curious if anyone has done this or ever about wearing wigs for a wedding.

I think that given the circumstances, it would be absolutely fine for you to wear a wig for the wedding. I'm sorry I don't have any advice or suggestions, but I'm so glad that you are doing well!

Thank you both for the well wishes. I decided about the wig a few days after surgery. I'm very glad that that the mass wasn't cancerous. The only long term effect I will have is that I remember too much of my surgery. I was awake for part of the surgery and the meds they gave me where supposed to make me not remember but I remember a lot about the awake part.

My fiancee tells me everyday that I'm beautiful. The main reason for the wig is because somewhat nasty scars on my head that is still healing. I looked like a baseball for awhile with staples and stiches on my head.

Hi Shelly, I'm glad you are doing better..I'm sorry to hear about the fact you were awake..I'm assuming you have someone like a counselor to talk about those things with, right? You will look amazing on your wedding day; undoubtedly extra special for you and your family :-) Sorry I don't have any experience with wigs either!

Thank you Abigail. The reason I was awake for part of the surgery is because the mass was located near parts of my brain that control my speech and movement. The surgery I had is called awake craniotomy or awake brain surgery. If you google you find some vids on it. The brain doesn't have pain receptors so I didn't feel the surgery while I was awake. During the awake part while the surgeons were probing and cutting a nurse and two therapists were asking me questions, having me respond to flash cards, wiggle my toes, feet and fingers to make sure I wasn't being damaged by the surgery. The drugs given to me were supposed to make me not remember but I remember everything that happenend while I was awake.

I haven't thought about going to a counselor but I might consider it. Being awake during a surgery like that was scary. I was restrained by foam matresse toppers, compression boots around my body and I even remember feeling the cathether that put into my bladder.

Shelly, I'm not sure if they'd be able to help, but going to a salon and talking to a professional may give you some ideas as to your wig conundrum. I'm so glad that everything is alright, and I would second the suggestion to see a counselor.

I just recently found out that one of my past brides had worn a wig at her wedding. It looked so natural, I never knew.

That aside, I must commend you on your strength enduring all of that!

Hi Shelly! I'm glad your surgery went well! It sounds very scary indeed. Wigs these are really great and don't even look like a wig at all. Especially if you have a veil. You will be a very beautiful bride! Good luck!

There are some pretty advanced wigs out now a days, you probably don't have enough time for a custom order, but there are some "stock" wigs that can look quite nice. But you will need a professional stylist to work with it. There are human hair wigs, which look incredibly natural, but those are bit more pricey. You can get a pretty good quality fake wig for less, but synthetics don't style quite the same way as natural hair. And obviously you want to bring someone with you when they show you how to put it on. Good luck!

I am happy to hear that your surgery was successful and that cancer was not found. Yea!

Wearing a wig, for your wedding, will be lovely. There are so many wigs out there that look very natural and beautiful.

I actually have four. Haven't worn them for awhile, but I loved to be able to change my hair style depending on the type of event I was going to. LOL!

Wow, that is an incredible thing to experience and overcome. There are so many wigs made from real hair that nobody will ever know. Merle Norman has a very nice selection. I wish you a very speedy and healthy recovery.

I have thought purchasing human hair wigs even though they are pricey. I have been researching different wigs. I think could have some time to have a custom wig made. I haven't gone out much since I came home from the hospital and I had to wear a hockey helmet for awhile to protect my head. I had to razor shave around the stiches and staples a couple of times so they would heal better. I wear beanies, banadanas and caps around the house. My hair isn't growing too fast though. My recovery has been good and I'm able to do some work for my job from my house.

Would you like me to ask my bride where she purchased hers?

A really good lacefront wig will do you justice. Just do me one favor, rock that wig like it's growing from the roots. Best wishes to you and yours.

Lace fronts are the best. they are pricey so if its over your budget you can buy a regular wig you love. and take it to the salon and have them cut it to fit and frame your face and style. they do it all the time.

Without giving too many details, I can relate. Let me just say that you don't want to some cheap wig. You definitely need to be looking at higher end ones, and will probably want to spend about $300-500, depending on the length you want.

Your best option is to contact your closest cancer center. They will actually know all the local resources for wigs and can give you some good recommendations of companies to work with.

But, given the circumstances, you may be able to 'rent' one for the day. Don't completely rule out that option.

What city are you in? I know you can find lacefronts in local hair stores from prices as low as $39 to hundres of dollars. The ones online are very pricey and range from hundreds to thousands of dollars.
