Underage Newlyweds and Honeymoon Hotel Check Ins?

Stephanie, on October 5, 2011 at 4:14 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 20

For those of you who are under 25 did you have trouble checking into your hotel/resort when you were on your HM? We are getting ready to help our daughter and her FH book their HM and want to know if there are certain guidelines since they will be married. They will call the hotels before just to make sure but I don't want them to get there and have it be a hassle.

I should say they won't be renting a car.

Well, I think it should be ok. From my knowledge, you have to be over the 'voting/drinking' age to book hotel rooms.

How old are they? and you might run into some issues if resorts have a age requirement and what an adult on board but shoot they are married treat the like adults

You have to be 18 in the states to book a hotel room because you need a valid credit card/debit card to hold the room. so they should have no issues.

They are 19 and they have a CC. It is a gift from her grandfather but he is giving them the money to put on their card so they will have used that card to book everything with. We just weren't sure if they would need a copy of the marriage cert. He is leaving for basic and they want a minimoon before he leaves.

I've rented hotel rooms at 19, but maybe they should call ahead and confirm no issues. I stress that they should call as it seems odd for the mom to call and check on hotel arrangements if their child is old enough to get married.

They are making most of the wedding/HM decisions and paying for a lot of it themselves, so they will be the ones to call.

Check with the hotel's policy, but 18 should be old enough to get a hotel room. Some hotels don't allow 18 without an "adult" because of the risk underage drinking. Keep in mind that gift cards are not good for checking in.. have them check in with their own card so the deposit hold will be placed (it's usually something like $200) and then they can pay the morning of checkout using their gift card for the exact amount.. The $200 should deduct right away where as the actual payment for their stay won't occur until after their stay and the deposit hold usually doesn't get credited back for up to a week. If they use the gift card, the hold will be on the gift card and they won't be able to use that money.. at least that's how I remember from working at the Marriott.

There shouldn't be a problem if they're over 18... but like others have said, check with the hotel first.

I've been checking out hotels in Las Vegas and they said you had to be 21. I've never heard of a minimum age of 25 for hotels.

I know I got a hotel room when I was 18. I used a card in my own name. But hey, if they need to get around it's not impossible to rent a car under 25. My fiance and I rented an SUV to move a ways away and we're 23. We did it through Hertz. They've just started a program to rent out to "at risk" drivers. They charge a small fee but since it's a new program they've waived the fee. They can also rent a car straight from a Toyota dealer under 25 for a relatively inexpensive price. The car needs to be returned to the same dealer they got it from but since this is a HM that's not an issue. I'm just putting it out there in case they'd like to get a car for a day or two go a ways away from where they are staying.

We had no problems and we were 22 and 23. This was in Florida. All they wanted was a credit card on file for any excess charges (the resort was a timeshare my grandma had, so it was free yay!). We did stay away from renting a car though. =]

I've seen various age requirements for hotels, most 18, some 21, and the resort we're staying for our HM is 25. I would definitely call the hotel first to check and if there is an age requirement, see if they'll waive it for the newlyweds.

It should be fine, I rented a hotel room with 5 friends on my 20th birthday, we were all under 21 and not exactly doing things that are legal for 20 yr olds... but non of us had our ID checked or were even asked why we were all staying in a huge hotel room together when we lived in town. Maybe that was just good luck?

Thank you for all of the help. They were first thinking of stay at a local Spa/Resort but her FH has never been to Disneyland so they are now thinking of going there for 4 nights. There are so many hotels there that I don't think they will have trouble finding one that will work for them. Now to just find the best deals and watch airfare sales. Also they wont need a car so we already checked into taking a shuttle from the airport. Makes it easy.

All the towns I've tried booking hotels at for FH and me have refused us because we're under 21. (just for road trips and such, we'll both be 21 by the honeymoon) It gets a bit irritating. Definitely call the hotel or resort first to be on the safe side

Some hotels require you to be 21 to check in and some 18. I just turned 21 and have stayed in plenty of hotels and never had a problem with it. Just have to know their age requirments.

If they have trouble, you may be able to resolve it by calling the hotel. I know that my son and several of his friends checked into a hotel on their own at the age of 16. (No, it was not their honeymoon.) The hotel basically just wanted to make sure that someone over the age of 18 would be responsible if they trashed the place.

I work at a hotel in Northern Ca. I have never heard of a 25 age limit. Just a minor under the age of 18 has to be accompanied by an adult. They do have to have a credit card in their name to check in for incidentals. I know we only charge the card $50 per night over the room rate for incidentals (phone calls, broken or stolen items, etc.) But it is always a good idea to double check by calling the hotel.
