To Change Your Last Name Or Not To Change Your Last Name...that Is The Question

Immediately after getting engaged my now husband and I started discussing whether or not I would change my last name. I thought it would be most fair for both of us to hyphenate our last names but my husband thought that was not traditional. I had this complex about the woman changing her last name representing the man owning her but my husband completely disagreed. Ultimately, I decided to change my last name to his and it is the first huge sacrifice I am making in my marriage.

Are you changing your last name? Why or why not?

We are both hyphenating. I am an only child so my last name ends with me. So it was important for me to keep it. However, my FH seemed a little sad that I didn’t want to change my name lol. So we compromised with both hyphenating for the consistency when we have children. We thought about an alternative last name (picking a new one or combing our 2 last names to make a new one) but could not agree on anything.

100%! This is what I keep telling people, maternal lineage is always correct (unlike paternal lol) & the baby literally comes out of a mother. So why do kids typically get father’s last name?
I hear women say name change expectations have nothing to do with a man owning a woman, but that’s exactly where the name tradition came from.
FH & I thought about making a new name by combing our last names (it actually sounds cool), but decided to keep our names, because of our professional identities, degrees, patents etc. If we have children, they will have my last name or both of our names hyphenated!

I love the idea of hyphenating the children's last name.

I’m changing my last name, I’ve actually always liked that tradition and I do happen to like his name better anyway!

I will be changing mine. Regardless of my new last name it doesn't take away from who I was born too. Will always be a Williams but looking forward to being Mrs. Smith.

I am, but only because I really like his last name and it makes my name sound way better.

It was 2 years in April. My kids were kids were 9 and 7 when we started dating. They are 16 and 14 now and I think they appreciate that I still have their name. My ex doesn't mind and understands why I haven't changed it yet.

I personally love my last name and my husband’s last name is not my favorite and is sooooo common but it eventually grew on me. I never discuss for both of us to hyphenate, seems like a lot of work from the both of us. I did however discuss him to get mine instead since he’s not close to his dad and my last name is unique. He really didn’t like the idea so I change it to his. I like the tradition and I want to be marry in every possible way to him so I changed it. It didn’t feel like a sacrifice, it really grew on me and I love it.

My FH prefers me to take his last name but he is open to me hyphenating. I like the idea of hyphenating as I am keeping a part of my identity while adding his last name to mine. We will see but if he becomes more adamant about me taking his last name only then I will. I will still be me no matter what.

Nah, I'm honestly looking forward to taking his last name. He was surprised!

    ********

The first real sacrifice I'm making will be wearing 3-inch heels on our wedding day instead of 5. I know that sounds realllllyyy petty and ridiculous, but I change my heel height for NO ONE...... except him, starting on our wedding day, because we are similar in height and I know it will make him feel more comfortable on a day that is his as much as it is mine.

I am changing my last name. A lot of my friends are choosing to hyphenate their last names. My last name is Dozbaba and his is Bocanegra, so hyphenating mine would be way too crazy sounding! Lol. So, Ashley Bocanegra it is.

My fiancée and I definitely want to have the same last name, but we haven’t decided which name we’re using yet. It’s a bit long and awkward to hyphenate, so we’re just going to choose one.

We just need to decide which we like more!
