To Change Your Last Name Or Not To Change Your Last Name...that Is The Question

Immediately after getting engaged my now husband and I started discussing whether or not I would change my last name. I thought it would be most fair for both of us to hyphenate our last names but my husband thought that was not traditional. I had this complex about the woman changing her last name representing the man owning her but my husband completely disagreed. Ultimately, I decided to change my last name to his and it is the first huge sacrifice I am making in my marriage.

Are you changing your last name? Why or why not?

The way I see it marriage is a choice, I’m choosing that last name. I’ll forever be my dad’s daughter, I have the roots of my original last name printed in my blood is part of who I am and my personality and I was born with it. Being my husband wife was a choice I made and so was choosing to take his last name. Is not common in my country to do so but I like the tradition and I want to have the same last name as my kids.

My fiancé had actually considered him changing his last name to mine and I wasn’t into it at all. I wanted to change mine. I never looked at it like he would own me or anything like that. This being said I totally totally understand why some people might think that or why they might not want to change it. My fiancé’s reasoning behind him wanting to change his last name is because he doesn’t associate with the people in his family with that name. He actually has both his brother and fathers last names as his so we are both just changing it to one of them.

I’m looking forward to changing my last name. I’m one of three girls and both my sisters are already married and have changed their last names.
I can understand how some think of it as an ownership. I am choosing to change mine because I love the way my first name sounds with his last name.

Yes I am. I see it as more of us two joining together and strengthening our bond, rather than that my husband owns me. I can't wait to change my name.

I am hyphenating my last name because I love my last name and it is my family name.
