Thrift store brides??

elise, on May 10, 2012 at 3:16 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 18

Well, I just had a HUGE fight with my dad( I can't belive it lol)

I bought my dress from a local Goodwill and had it altered

- its a beautiful dress and it was ALMOST what I pictured, I just got it back today and now its perfect,

or it was until my father found out it was used lol

Is there some kind of law that one MUST spend 1,000 on a wedding gown?

*cough* my parents seem to think so...

(and no, they haven't offered to buy me one as of this post, though they might I cant ever tell with them lol)

That's a great way to save money and keep your budget down. I'm sorry your Dad is upset about where you purchased the dress. Personally I applaud you. Not to offend anyone on here is is spending $1,000 on a wedding dress but for me that's not worth it for 1 day (if I had the money maybe I'd think different). I will certainly spend more than I would on a normal dress but if you love the dress that's all that matters.

Just laugh it off. It is your day and you are pleased with the dress than that it is all that matters.

    Thanks!

@Shannon -I was really proud of myself for only spending about 80$ on the dress, though at this point I guess I can't brag about it lol

LOL @Blair, yeah I know- it seems to me the goodwill MUST cater mostly to 6ft tall size 2 glamazons since thats all that usually ends up on the racks!

I love thrift stores like I love chocolate, only worse because I convince myself its a good idea to spend 100$ on dollar days!

@La-Kia I LOVE the dress!! honestly, I don't think I could've found a dress like this at a bridal store anyway (since it exists mostly in my head) and I was REALLY happy I found a lady who could work with me on it!

Does your father think it is bad luck? maybe he is supersticious in his beliefs and his anger really stems from the belief the dress may "doom" your impending day. you could always remind him that it used to be and often times still is a tradition to pass down a wedding dress. those dresses are used as well. if you are happy with it don't let your dad get you down.

@Blair, I'll get to posting pics of it as soon as I get them taken lol

@Lady_Luck well, maybe? My father is very religious, I'll try to talk to him again once everything cools down.

The dress wasn't a wedding dress before I think, it was just a really long white sundress...

It's your choice. Your day and your the one that is buying it, unless they offer later. But as of now, it's your money. There is nothing wrong with you buying a second hand dress. I bought my dress off the rack and who knows how many women tried it on. Remember, if they really love you, they will respect your choices.

What does he think: that you'll walk down the aisle with a big sign saying "used" on your back? If the dress is beautiful, and you saved money buying it, I don't see the problem. Both NotFroofy and I wore dresses from a consignment store. If your father is religious, he should be glad that you are doing the right thing by getting married, and are helping to ensure that your marriage starts off on the right financial foot by doing what you can to save money. Given that finances are a big cause of divorce, he should applaud your responsibility.

You know, I get the superstition. When we were first discussing getting engaged my aunt suggested getting my ring at the pawn shop. I was thinking it sounded like bad juju because if it ended up pawned signs pointed to the idea that the engagement didn't work out. Then she said to me "Look, the ring doesn't make the marriage; the couple does." And she was totally right! She and her husband have been together since she was 17 and legend has it he went home to his mom the day he met her and said "Mom, I've found the girl I'm going to marry." They are still as giddy and romantic as teenagers five kids and 17 years later. Absolutely they have had their issues and rocky times, but who doesn't? Overall they are one of the top three marriages I look to for guidance and inspiration for my own.

We ended up getting my ring from Pawn America for $120 and I couldn't be happier with it. Who cares if your dress is used?

Lol. This reminds me of a great coat I have that my Grandmother complimented me on. After I told her it was from a thrift store (I was very proud of that find!) the rest of the trip she kept trying to drag me to macys to buy a NEW coat. We buy most of our clothes, and other things, at thrift store all the time. Congrats on your awesome find!

I wouldn't worry about it, I got my dress at a place that sold used and sample wedding gowns and prom dresses. No one in my family or his family has have an issue with it, also if it's such a big deal to them they should have offered to pay for the dress. Lastly it's not even the same dress since you got it altered to be what you wanted :+) Since you're happy they should be happy for you.

Has he seen it. If not and he offers you money, take the money and run. He'll never know the other one was used you can put that money towards, more apps, wine, etc.

I'm not sure if you know your dad's financial situation, but maybe he feels like he isn't doing what some can perceive as his fatherly 'duty' by spending a zillion dollars on your wedding. If he's traditional, maybe he feels like he should be paying, and he's a little embarassed.

Sit down with your dad and try to show him that nowadays, a large percentage of couples pay themselves.

If you like the dress thats what matters, no one else will know that it was used, its not like you are walking around with a sign on it lol
