So my cousin got married this past Saturday. My family and I were invited so we went. It was an outdoor wedding and everything was beautiful. Until the reception. No cocktail hour no nothing. She had a tent set up and the tables were decorated beautifully. Well after the ceremony we all (60 of us) gathered in the tent where there was a sign that read "sit wherever you like." Thank goodness we got a table with people we knew. Well the food was salad and bread. That's it. Well I was thinking it was just an appetizer but no. That was it. There was no bar or anything just a lemonade stand! Well after the "food was done." That was it. No DJ, no dance floor no music..nothing. The bride and groom thanked everyone. Grabbed the card box and left. Also found out from my uncle that the grooms best man was a guy he met on Craigslist because he had no one else. Worst wedding ever!!! Let's here your stories?

    I have been to some sketchy weddings in the past few months and have also been to a very nice one as well.

    I honestly don't think people see their planning/or actual event as bad if it turns out that way.

    I have even heard of a bride and groom having alcohol for themselves but not for their guests! I am thinking that is pretty low on the etiquette scale.

    @LisaLee I'm pretty sure everyone can afford a wedding. A marriage license is less than $50 in my state.

    My response to Lisa Lee;

    "The answer to all of this is simple, Lisalee (or should we refer to you as Mother Theresa?)

    You have the wedding you can afford. If you have 200.00, you can have a JP, a clerk or a judge, and take your two witnesses out for nice little lunch. You don't invite 60 guests, expect them to travel and then give them water and salad.

    Your ire is misplaced here, and you come off sounding arrogant and privileged while chastising others for DARING to point out bad hosting at a gold standard level.

    No one 'deserves' a wedding of a certain style; not you, not any given person here, not any given person living in any given place. If you're so concerned about the financial inequality of the wedding industry, maybe you could scale down and donate all the money from your black tie wedding to some non profit; maybe one that provides clean water to third world kids.

    But that's not a possibility is it? It's like my Buddhist friends who won't get to the point of renouncing all their earthy good.....because they can't live without them."

    Stop flagging.

    People come to this forum, theoretically, to ask for advice when planning a wedding. There are a million variations on that theme.

    But please don't come here, carry on about your "black tie wedding because we can afford it" and then take up the cause of 'the little people". Yes, the arrogance of your post was palpable.

    Do what you can afford, and champion those who don't have your resources in entertaining their guests in a way that is gracious. Not a bowl of lettuce, a glass of lemonade and a bolt to the door with the gift cards.

    Hey AthenaKay! How's it going?

    I'm just here for the comments.

    BTW, I'm not American, we Canadian girls can throw down and be bitches with the rest of you, we just say eh, and eat poutine while we do it.

    Props to Centerpiece for the use of "abomination" as a descriptor. Accurate and pithy.

    Haven't been on in days, but for 2 minutes last night. Nice to see EW hasn't changed, and her little white Knight army is adding to their ranks. Barf.
