The things that went wrong at our wedding

OregonEmily, on August 13, 2014 at 5:13 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 46

With so much going on, things are bound to go wrong! Nothing came anywhere close to ruining the day, but here is what went wrong at our wedding, followed by how we dealt with it.

1) People started eating cake early- I know our cupcakes were f*cking delicious, and the convenient single servings are very welcoming, but what adult doesn't know that you are supposed to wait for the bride and groom to do their cake exchange before you dive in?

We just shrugged it off and finished our meal. We did the traditional "feed each other cake" bit when we were good and ready.

2) Guests showed up that RSVPed "No"- We didn't know they were coming until we saw them as we were literally walking down the aisle!

Although an inconvenience, we were happy they were able to make it. At dinner they found chairs and squeezed in at a table with people they knew.

    3) The hairdresser was an hour late- This was the only thing that really pissed me off. She rushed through my appointment so I wouldn't be late walking down the aisle. She only spent 20 minutes doing my hair instead of 1.5 hours. The final product was messy and unprofessional. Our first look pics had to be cut short, but we made it to the ceremony on time!

I didn't tip her and left her a negative review. I didn't let the experience mess with our wedding day.

    4) My mom did not come- Some of you may be familiar with the story of my abusive, drug-addicted mother with borderline personality disorder. As much as I can't stand her, she is still my mother. So it was strange that she wasn't present on my wedding day.

But it was for the best. I know I was much more at ease than I would be if she was there.

    5) Snacks were completely ignored- I bought a ton of goodies to keep people satiated after dinner. (trail mix, peanut butter filled pretzels, rice cracker/wasabi pea mix) But everyone was still full from the meal.

We just packed it up, took it home, and now we have snacks to munch on for at least a month!

Many other things "went wrong." These are just a few highlights. Moral of the story? It's all ok because it's your wedding day and it's going to be awesome!

I love this post. It seems like you and DH took everything in stride and still had an amazing day! How rude of your hairstylist. That really would have ticked me off, too. Congratulations again! Hope you are enjoying married life! Smiley smile

Our guests helped themselves to food as soon as a plate of meat was placed on the table even though it was clear that the buffet was still being set up. People were eating lunch before we even walked in to the reception. And yes, we DID provide appetizers on a separate table. I, of course, thought it was a travesty and sulked about it for weeks but from the people I talked to, no guests noticed that it was weird and there was never a line for the buffet. Silver lining? LOL

I'm so glad you had a wonderful day and didn't let the little things get to you. Sorry about your mom and your hairdresser is a bitch. I mean, seriously, an HOUR late? noooo.

@JoBu- Married life rocks my socks. It's pretty much the same as before, just better.

@MizizAngi- So weird that guests don't understand how that stuff works!

Oh, I forgot a big one!

    6) I left my wedding jewelry at home. I was bummed about that for about 3.5 seconds. I've got more important things to worry about! I actually thought the simplicity of no bracelet, necklace or dangly earrings was nice. I thought a bare neck was almost striking with the neckline of my dress.

What is it with people who think they can just dive in to desserts? Haha! We've got cupcakes, so I'm hoping that won't be the case. Smiley winking However, I won't really care at that point.

Glad you left your hairdresser a bad review. That is totally unprofessional. An hour late? Did she say why?

@Kim- She stayed late for another appointment that wasn't going as planned. They called me to ask if she could come to my appointment late to which I politely said "no." They called me a half hour later saying she was going to be late anyway. Way lame.

Thanks for sharing your day's challenges. That was so unprofessional of the stylist, but it sounds like you made your day wonderful despite these mishaps. Congrats to you and hubby!

Hair. That is ridiculous. You can't make another couple late because your first one was messed up.

Glad it all worked out though; congratulations!

@AugustBride- So glad I helped! Stuff WILL go wrong. But none of it will come close to outweighing how great the day will be! I was amazed by how I just didn't care when things went wrong. In light of what was happening that day, those things just didn't matter.

I would have left her a bad review as well. Super unprofessional given that you said "no" and she ignored you completely. It's amazing how few reviews actually exist out there for vendors, so I am glad you are helping out another bride in the future.

Emily, I noticed the hair stylist was kind of shite from the start.

Were you stuck with no other options besides her? Smiley sad

@AI0921- She was pretty bad. After being unhappy with her attitude during the hair trial, I started looking at other options. I couldn't find anyone else in my area that was willing to travel to the venue. Going to a salon wasn't an option for me due to logistics, so I just stuck with her.

Her attitude was definitely better on my wedding day, but her hairstyling (and punctuality) was not!
