Thank you cards! Who gets one? Where did you buy them? Show me yours!

beautyofdreams, on August 23, 2016 at 4:49 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 25

Now that the wedding day has come and gone I am ready to send out thank you cards! I think I want to do one with a wedding photo on the front and blank inside to write a message. I know its a big no-no to have pre-written ones so I'll be writing a personal note for each! Question, do all guests get a thank card? I was thinking I should send one regardless of the gift to thank people for coming...is that odd? What did you do? Some people do postcards. Is that ok? Where did you buy them? How did you do the addressing (clear label, preprinted, written?) Feel free to share pictures!

I'm thinking something similar to this folded note card style.

I used boring cards I got at the stationery store. Miss Manners says you don't have to thank people who didn't give gifts-- after all, you just hosted them at a party. And, in my experience, postcards get lost in the mail a lot more often than thicker cards, so I'd steer clear of postcards-- you don't want someone to think you didn't take the time to thank them (like both my younger brothers...) when you did (unlike my younger brothers...).

Thanks @zoe. I definitely want to use the folded cards but I see alot of postcards on all the wedding sites so I didn't know if that was a new trend for thank you cards.

I got the photo cards and did send them to everyone who came to the wedding. Even if they didn't send a gift, they took off work, traveled, paid for lodging. I got them off shutterfly with a coupon code. They were still over $2 a piece. The postcard ones are half that, and I think a postcard is fine, but I'd still buy envelopes for them since you will be writing a personal message on each. If you go this route, ask your photographer in advance if you can get a sneak peak of a photo for your thank you cards. Your pro photos could take 2 months or more to come back. I filled them out and my husband addressed them. It took 4 nights after work.

@CO Bride Thanks! Luckily enough we have a sneak peak from our photograph so we have a few pictures to choose from. Did you hand write the addresses? My handwriting is terrible. lol.

I was cheap and got some at Tuesday mornings.. they were like $4 for 20 cards. I looked into minted, but they were like $120 for about 70 cards

Check out VistaPrint, you can do photo cards there, including envelopes and they are always running a sale.

I ordered from weddingpaperdivas. Used a groupon. Still cost about $110 for 100 thank you cards.

@beautyofdreams, I had my husband write them to divide and conquer. Mine is terrible too, but I wrote the message on the inside of the cards, so everyone saw my chicken scrawl anyway. I don't see anything wrong with a printed label, I just don't have a printer at home and didn't want to use work resources to make them. That's great you already have the photo- I'd price shutterfly, vistaprint, and snapfish for the best sale. I wouldn't order wedding prints I wanted to frame from them, but the quality is fine for a greeting card.

    Photo cards are cute.

Only send a thank you card to those who sent a gift. Otherwise it's very passive aggressive to send a note that basically comes off as "you came and didn't send a gift, SO THANKS ANYWAY." I mean, you don't send thank you cards after Christmas to someone who didn't send you a gift.

The reception you're throwing is thank you for attending the ceremony; the card IS for receiving a gift.

@AMW, I never thought of it that way. Our wedding was a four hour drive from the nearest airport and a seven hour drive for the Colorado guests, and I did want to genuinely thank people for coming all that way- I didn't care that a handful of guests didn't give a gift. I really hope they didn't think I was passive-aggressively calling them out for no gift!

I designed our photo thank you cards from vistaprint and loved them. We used pictures from our wedding day on both sides so they were super personal. Here's the front and back. We sent one to every one/every couple/every family.

I used generic ones and handwrote them as well as the addresses. What AMW said, they're specifically for gifts. We got several gifts after the wedding too so we just wrote those as they came.

I'm sending a thank you to everyone who attends or sends a gift. Even those who attend with no gift. They still took time out of their day and most likely spent money to celebrate your marriage. And how hard/expensive is a few more thank you cards?

I think you should send thank you cards only to the guest that gave you gifts or money. I am going to just buy simple ones and send them out as I receive my gifts.

We did the folded, photo style from vistaprint. Apparently it's not required but, we did send to everyone that came, as we appreciated the time taken out of their lives and that they chose to celebrate with us.

We ordered ones that match our invitation. But we got our photo save the dates from vista print and were really happy! They had a 50 off coupon at the time.
