Teachers taking time off for their wedding??

Cara, on July 19, 2017 at 4:38 PM Posted in Planning 0 68

I'm an untenured teacher (going into year 3), getting married on a Saturday in April that is not over a break. I am getting married in my hometown which is 5 hours away from where I am currently living. I purposely saved my April break to take our honeymoon. I was wondering how many days other teachers are taking off if they are getting married on a weekend that is not break? I was thinking on taking the Thursday/Friday before because of the rehearsal dinner, and the Monday/Tuesday after to say goodbye to out of town guests and allow for a travel day. Is this too much time or does it sound appropriate? When will you be telling your principals of when you're taking off? Thank you!!

ETA: We were unable to plan a summer wedding because FH will be starting residency as an Emergency Medicine doctor and will not be given time off yet. April was chosen because he is off then before residency begins.

I think that is a really tough question and a very delicate issue, tenure or not, but especially not tenured.

It sounds like a lot of time to me. Most of my teacher couples do their weddings in the summer....or they schedule their honeymoons to work with the school calendar.

Why not wait to take the honeymoon a couple months til summer? Most teachers I know take advantage of their schedule and plan trips/their weddings when they're already off, given that they have 3 months off at once.

It can depend on the school. I grew up in a family of teachers and school workers (teachers, therapist, principal and school nurse) and this would be unheard of and unacceptable.

My sister is a school principal now, and works all year, so her vacation time is different. When teachers make requests like this - they are generally denied.

What does your contract say? Can you take personal time for that long at the same time? Do you get docked pay?

You need to ask your school if this is acceptable or not.

I'm not a teacher, but that sounds like a lot of time off. As I understand it from my teacher friends, you get massive amounts of time off at certain times of the year but in return you are expected to be at work whenever the school is not on break. If I were in your shoes I wouldn't plan on taking any time off. Assuming school lets out around 3, you could be in your hometown by 8 on Friday. Then you have all day Saturday and most of Sunday as well.

I am also a teacher and am definitely taking the Thursday and Friday off before my wedding. There's another teacher in my school getting married who's taking a whole week. Where I work schools are pretty accommodating, I don't think 4 days is unacceptable

I was unable to plan a summer wedding as my FH will be entering his first year of residency to be an emergency medicine doctor and cannot get off Smiley sad we chose April because he's a fourth year medical student and that is his only month off before residency begins

I am getting married where I live but I am only taking Friday off to help set up and get things ready for the rehearsal dinner. Also, we are postponing our honeymoon and doing it over my Christmas break which is unfortunately more expensive but we wanted that time without me having to take so many days off

I would've done a wedding in the summer but we didn't want to wait until 2018 so we decided November.

I get 2 personal days a year and in my second year in this district so I'll have 4 I can use. I used one this year when my FH and I closed on our house so I have 3 left. I'm taking Thursday and Friday before the wedding and Monday after. I'm working the Tuesday after the wedding (the Tuesday before thanksgiving). I could've taken that day off but I'd have to take it unpaid and don't want to go through the paperwork that goes along with that. FH and I will go on a delayed honeymoon once we've saved up more money (with the house and wedding this year we won't have too much left).

A coworker is taking a week after the wedding off unpaid to go on her honeymoon.

EDIT: I already told my principal just so she was aware. I hate writing sub plans but figured I only get married once and don't want added stress because I'll feel stressed already traveling from WI to CA for the wedding and being away from my students for 3 days in a row.

I would assume that you know your schools' time off policy better than us, but to me that sounds like a lot of time off, given that you also have the entire summer and all breaks off as well.

I would choose a day or two either before or after, but not both.

Same situation! I teach all year round so summer wasn't even an option and we are waiting for my break in June to go on a honeymoon and our wedding is in October. Since we go all year round, we get 5 personal days so I'm taking Thursday though Wednesday off and racking up my sick time for other days off I may need throughout the year.

I'm year 3, our school year starts in July so I'm already considered year 3. What do you teach? I teach intensive special ed, all autism. Our whole school is autism which is why we are year round, it makes it better for the kids and we have a significant amount in poverty.

I'm a teacher too. I will be taking off 3 days for our wedding weekend in October, then going on a "real" honeymoon on my Spring Break in April. I will say, that this will be my 5th year at my school and I've saved a lot of my allotted days over the years. Maybe consider just taking off for Friday, Monday, and Tuesday?

I'm taking Thursday/Friday before the wedding and the Monday/Tuesday after the wedding. We are currently living in a Colorado and are getting married back home in Florida.

That would be literally all of my personal days for the year. We're getting married on a Friday, and are taking the Thursday and Friday of that week off. We live across the country from where the wedding is and so we're flying in the morning of the rehearsal. The week after is a break, so I don't have to take any time off for the honeymoon. Otherwise we would have delayed the honeymoon until another break.

You really don't need Thursday, Monday, or Tuesday. You could easily drive down Friday morning, and back Sunday afternoon. I'm not sure what your schools policy is, but most people get really limited personal days and it seems silly to use more than you actually need.

That depends on your contract and whether you think you may want a day or two saved for emergencies the rest of the year. My parents are/were both teachers (one is now retired). Mom has been a teacher for 20 years, and still only gets 3 personal days a year. Generally teachers book everything for holidays, winter break, spring break, summer, etc.

I am an untenured teacher as well; we get 10 hours of leave a month that I have accumulated. I technically only get 3 personal days a year from those leave hours.

I will be taking of Thursday and Friday before my wedding in February! I did not look at the schedule though and my wedding is President's Day weekend; I do not have that Monday off but it is a student holiday. I am still debating whether or not I'll be "sick" that day. Probably not to be honest, but we will see!

ETA: I did this purposefully so I could go on my honeymoon over Spring Break, which is March 31-April 7.

What does your contract say? Do you get vacation time or personal days off? At the school I work at we get a certain number of days off we can take per school year. I'm a counselor in a school and I've seen teachers take off time for personal events in their lives. As long as you do it ahead of time it shouldn't be a problem. My wedding is June 22nd and the last day for teachers is the 21st or 22nd I believe, but I usually work right until the end of June. I will most likely take off the 21st and 22nd. I will probably discuss with my Principal end of September to make sure he's well aware.

ETA - I see that you get five personal days. I don't think it should be a problem with you taking all those days off. As long as you talk to your principal way in advance. In the school I work in they are very accommodating to requests to tale off. As long as you don't request off more time than you have.

I am also an untenured teacher and I am taking the Friday before my wedding off plus the week after for our honeymoon. I work at a private special education school and was able to carry a portion of my unused sick time over from last year to use.

I'm not a teacher, but I would second the Friday-Tuesday. I know my cousins (teachers) had issues with their respective weddings (all three of them got married on Columbus Day weekend), because they took a day or two off before/after a planned break. I think they all had to take it unpaid, but luckily all three teach in an understaff inner city school system so their lack of tenure wasn't a huge issue. What have others in your school done recently? Do you have a mentor you can ask?
