I'm an untenured teacher (going into year 3), getting married on a Saturday in April that is not over a break. I am getting married in my hometown which is 5 hours away from where I am currently living. I purposely saved my April break to take our honeymoon. I was wondering how many days other teachers are taking off if they are getting married on a weekend that is not break? I was thinking on taking the Thursday/Friday before because of the rehearsal dinner, and the Monday/Tuesday after to say goodbye to out of town guests and allow for a travel day. Is this too much time or does it sound appropriate? When will you be telling your principals of when you're taking off? Thank you!!

ETA: We were unable to plan a summer wedding because FH will be starting residency as an Emergency Medicine doctor and will not be given time off yet. April was chosen because he is off then before residency begins.

I think it really depends on your district's policies. I am also untenured and going into my third year with my school. I get two personal days and fifteen sick days which my district is pretty lenient about teachers using at their discretion. I'm getting married in a Sunday so I am using my two personal days the Monday and Tuesday after the wedding. But I know I can use a sick day further down the line if I need to. We are waiting until next summer to take our honeymoon so we can save some money.

I would just take Friday off to travel and for the rehearsal. I know it sucks, but you could leave Sunday afternoon and still be home at a reasonable hour to go to work Monday.

@cara my FH is a resident as well, and i have never heard of any residency programs that start before mid-june. does he really start in may or are you also scheduling a move? if so, i would try to go for an early june wedding.

I'd check with administration. That's way too many days off, considering how many breaks we have. I'd only take the Friday off, drive over early in the morning, and drive back on Sunday. Thursday, Monday, and Tuesday are totally unnecessary. You also want to save your other personal days in case you need them for emergencies. I don't think my principal would approve so many days for a wedding.

@Ella, he is starting end of June for his residency, and we are also scheduling a move. There wasn't time for a honeymoon in May or June, so we opted with April since I had a week off as well and we could do both the wedding and honeymoon.

I am also an untenured teacher who will be getting married during the school year. It isn't even a concern, in my opinion. I'll be taking off Friday for the rehearsal dinner and Monday to settle in. I know my principal won't have an issue with it. He is very understanding with things like this. Our union gives us 5 personal days a year, as well; we're very lucky.

I'm an untenured teacher (tenure no longer exists in my state), but I got married over the summer to avoid taking days off. A teammate of mine got married in March. She took off Friday, got married Saturday, and took off Monday. Our district allows for 10 days off per year. 6 are personal and the other 4 are sick. Our principal is pretty great though and allows us to use the days however we please.

Talk to your principal as soon as the year begins and see what they think.

Using Sunday, Monday and Tuesday to say good-bye to guests and drive 5 hours home seems like a lot. Most guests will be gone Sunday. What exactly are you going to do the other two days, if not a mini-moon?

I am an untenured teacher who will be getting married during the school year. I am planning to take Thursday/ Friday and Monday off. I hope to only miss those three days this year. Our honeymoon is scheduled a month after the wedding, over spring break.

@cara gotcha. that is tough then with two restrictive schedules. only other option i guess would be to use your april break for your wedding and do a later honeymoon.

@OP - Another question - do your unused days roll over?

In my district they do and our principals aren't really allowed to deny our days off. We have the days to use however we please. I'm saving mine up to extend my eventual maternity leave when H and I start a family.

Being that you are untenured, I would only take Friday and Monday. Even if you have additional personal days, not taking all of them shows your commitment. It would be highly frowned upon to take more days than that in my district.

I was thinking of doing the same (th, Fri, mon, tu). They already know my wedding is in December. And our honeymoon will fall during my second week of winter break (1st week of January)

@Ms. B --> Mrs. L, our sick days roll over but not personal. We get 5 personal every year. I currently have around 20 sick days and will have 5 personal for the in coming school year.

Gotcha. Are you allowed to use them interchangeably? Like I'm allowed to tell my principal that I'm going to take off a certain day and will be using a sick day for it. I can put in for the sub ahead of time but just can't file the day off until right before.

I am a teacher I am taking off that Thursday and Friday before the wedding and the Tuesday after. Our wedding is over Labor Day weekend. We are taking a honeymoon over Thanksgiving and I am taking two more days then. This is my fifth year teaching and I saved up my personal days

My wedding will be next November, which will be my 3rd year of teaching. I plan to save my PTO days this year to ensure I have some available to use. I currently have 5 PTO days in my "bank" rolling over to this coming year. My district gives 1 and 1/4 days each month worked, so it ends up at around 12 each year. I plan to take Thursday and Friday off before my Saturday wedding and return to work the following Tuesday. We will take our honeymoon over the winter break.

I would take the Friday off to allow for travel and the rehearsal/ RD and then Monday afterwards to say goodbye and travel back home. And try to get as wedding stuff done after school and on the weekends.
