Teachers taking time off for their wedding??

I'm a teacher too. I teach elementary music, this will be year three for me (non-tenured). Originally we were planning to wed December 16th, and I would have only taken off one day, the 15th (Friday). Then I would have worked the next week and used winter break for our honeymoon. We changed plans to August for other reasons, but definitely would not have taken more than two days off.

As a non-tenured teacher, I wouldn't DARE taking off that many days. Deserving? YES. Should you be allowed? ABSOLUTELY. However, you don't have tenure, job security for teachers is already challenged, and you don't need to spend two days saying goodbye to your guests. Just because you get a certain amount of days, does not mean you should take them. We are given 15 sick days each year, but if we take more than 5-6 we get a call from HR.

All of these posts about districts shaming teachers for taking off their given days makes me so sad. I live in a non-tenure state. Tenure just doesn't exist for anyone who came in after 2011. Our districts aren't allowed to deny our days. They can't require a doctor's note or say you can't take off more than x days in a row. Hell, a teacher at my school took off 2 weeks to go to Thailand because she felt like it. Guess what? She got rehired because she's a damn good teacher.

And people wonder why teachers are leaving in droves. I'd leave a district that tried to limit my days so fast!

I digressed. OP, you know your district better than any of us. If you're allowed to take the days, take them.

That's a lot in my opinion. In my district we only get 1 personal day a year and 3 sick days. After a total of 3 absences, our evaluations points start getting taken away. I refuse to take any days off in the school year.

I am a teacher and with FH's schedule and mine we decided on Memorial Day weekend. I am saving up my sick and personal leave and taking flying out to Kansas (we live in DC) on Tuesday after work, taking off Wed-Fri then the weekend and Monday is holiday, will likely fly back home Monday night to be at work on Tuesday. So overall 3 days. My principal knows I am engaged and as long as I have a sub to come in (which I already scheduled with my best/most reliable sub) she doesn't care how much time we take off. I will give her the exact dates when I book my flight in January/February. Honeymoon is going to have to wait until summer!

I agree, OP needs to know her district, but do not agree with the general statement if you are allowed to take the days, take them. OP can be allowed, but still may be denied tenure. Where I went to school, there are 100s of applicants for elementary school teacher jobs.

What did you end up doing?

I'm a sped teacher getting married in early May. I'm taking the Monday after my wedding off but returning on a Tuesday and because I'm sped I have ESY (in other words our school year is mid august- early July) so we're taking the opportunity to save up and go on a honeymoon during a school break. I had to be careful not to get married too close to testing, graduation, or the start of ESY.
Getting married as a teacher is not an easy feat!
