Tattoos and weddings...

Sandralyse, on June 28, 2011 at 9:32 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 23

I have two nice size tattoos on my shoulder blades...And i love them...one side has two butterflies with my two boys eyes potraited in ther butterflies wings and their names...love it

on my other side i have my other child's baby foot prints with his name...they are not tacky but i had family members tell me that my tattoo will make me look less elegant with my wedding dress because the back is exposed...I chose a dress that has a laced back but you wills till be able to see the tattoos...

Do you guys believe that tattoos will make me look less elegant with my wedding dress???

My personal opinion (I don't like tattoos so take it FWIW) is that they take away from the dress and the girl. When I see a girl with ink the first thing I look at is the ink. On your back it's much less bad than an arm tattoo but it would still be the first thing I see.

My sister is going to be in our wedding and she has several tattoos and she's already well aware that she has to cover them with make-up and she's accepting of that because I don't want anything to distract from my FW in the pictures.

    Your dress is gorgeous!

I am not a fan of visible tattoos when a woman is in evening wear, but I agree with Laura - if you love them, are comfortable and can rock the tats, I wouldn't worry about it. If you're concerned about how you'll feel looking at the pictures 20 years from now, just cover them up for the day.

My tattoos have significant meaning to me and only me really. a lot of my super conservative family just dont understand.. the wedding dress i fell in LOVE with happened to just cover them so i dont have to worry about my 2nd aunt whispering behind my back about how un-elegant i look or whatever. my tattoos are for me, not for anyone else. they dont have to understand them! but i just KNOW the older more conservative guests would be gossiping up a storm at the wedding, talking behind my back Smiley tongue i know it shouldnt care too much about what other ppl think about me, but it just annoys me! why cant ppl mind their own business?

it wasnt THE dress for me because they covered them up, its just my style! i love it

I don't think tattos are elegant no matter what they are. For good or bad they stand out and force the eye towards them. Same goes for eyeglasses, piercings, bright colored hair or even a birthmark or mole. Whether they add or detract from your look depends on the person looking. You can't please everyone so I wouldn't worry about it.

If your nervous about looking less elegant Here's an idea- why not cover the tattoos for the ceremony and then take the makeup off for the reception? I'm not sure whether or not your getting your makeup done professionally ... If you are there are airbrush options that can cover the tattoos and not smudge or rub off on your dress.

Thanks everyone for the advice and i think i am going to leave them as they are...my tattoos have meaning and i love them...

I guess i was having doubts and needed to hear some good advice...thank you all

I am proud of my tattoo. Seeing how one of yours represents your child, I can imagine you are prouder of yours then I am of mine (an American flag on my upper left arm) I am not going through the ordeal of hiding my tattoo. I see no reason to alter who I am in anyway for my wedding. Bottom line is, people there know me, who I am and know who I am even at my worst of times. So I say display those tats proudly and to hell what other people think. They don't like it, they do not have to look!

If you love them then show them that's why you got them, i am wearing a strapless dress and i have my whole back done. (Flag, soldier silhouettes, lyrics to god bless the USA, a bald eagle, raising flag from imo jima and falling red white and blue stars with dog tags.) The only part that will be showing is the top half which is a American flag and says never forget. my fiance and i are both military and having a military wedding so to me showing my flag what i fight and am willing to die for its something not worth hiding no matter how "un elegant" people may think it is. your kids are your life and you shouldn't want to hide whats important to you.

I am not a fan of visible tattoos when attending a formal event or wedding. If you do want to cover it up for the wedding, they do have make up that covers tattoos. I know Kat VonD (spelling?) sells one at Sephora

I love tattoos personally and wish FH didn't hate them so much because I want one so baddd. If your dress was completely backless I'd say leave them out! Smiley smile But my concern is that the lace will cover them and even though you can see through it a bit, it might look like your dress is dirty? Idk, it was just a thought that occurred to me. I don't want some older person coming up to you with bad eyesight trying to ''get the smudges off of your dress.'' Haha - I got my nails done once and just got purple flowers on my ring fingers... I can't tell you how many people thought it was a bruise and I shut my finger in a door somewhere. Smiley smile

My thing about covering your tattoo with that dress is the cover up will rub on the dress?? at least i could picture it rubbing on the lace

I always buy clothes with certain cuts in the back around my tattoo cause if it cuts off my tattoo it looks off.

I have two tatooss on my shoulder blades and my dress is strapless.... You can either get makeup to cover them or wear them out... I don't think it looks elegant but at the end of the day I don't care!!!! I also have a lip peircing and you better believe I am not taking that baby out!!!!! To make things simple do what YOU want.... Who cares what your Aunt has to say...

I have used make up in the past to try to cover one of mine... In my experience it didn't work very well. The tat in question is one I got when I was a teenager and not of the best judgement. It is now in the process of being removed (which is a painful and much longer process than I would have hoped for) so I won't have to cover it but I do have one on my shoulder that I am debating on whether I want to try and cover or just let it show. It is a part of me after all right?

In my opinion you got the tattoos because they mean something to you. and anything that is meaningful to you shouldn't be covered up to meet someones elses ideal of elegant.

word to those who are thinking about getting a tattoo- think about this. is what you want to get something that you will proudly show off for the rest of your life? or is it something that you are going to want to hide when you dress up or go on a date with someone (okay, so pretty much everyone here getting married, but tell your little sisters!)

personally i love me tattoo on my foot and it's a requirement that any cute heels I buy don't cover it up. It will be proudly shown of in my wedding pics.

    That is an amazing dress!

I think you should embrace your tattoo...you got it for a reason. I've shot weddings where tattoos were very visible on the bride and it didn't take away from her or the dress at all.

    Congrats!
