SWR - online dating sites

Snif, on March 30, 2011 at 1:58 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 34

What are the best online dating sites? A friend of mine has decided to get back into dating and wants to try out some sites but doesn't know which are the good, the bad, and the stalker creepy.

I see ads all the time for eharmony & match but I feel like when we've talked about this before a bunch of names I haven't heard of have popped up.

I know a lot of you have met your soul mates online (and according to match 1 out of 5 do!) so let me know what site & why you liked a particular one and I'll pass on the knowledge to her. Thanks a bunch!!

I've tried a few of them, but more just the free ones, and I was on there more just to find people to talk to.

But I ended up meeting FH on OkCupid Smiley smile

I met FH on Plentyoffish.com. (free)

Just make sure they understand that no matter WHAT the site (especially free ones), you have to sort out the good ones from the creepy ones....I made lots of friends off of POF.com!

Plenty of Fish is a good one. It is 100% free, and where I met my FH. You need to be carefull however, free or not its still the internet and even though there are some great ppl out there, there are also the not so great ones. I think that any site would be about the same except for expence. Just use common since when meeting strangers. Their are crazies everywhere.

I met my FH on POF (plenty of Fish)...not sure if thats just Canadian though. My girlfriend found her current BF on EHarmony and they have been together 8 months. Ive heard Match.com is good too. The key to filtering out the possible weirdos is fill out your expectations of what you are looking for from the start. I literally wrote on my introduction "do not even try to contact me if you are just looking for a quick hookup, I am looking for long term relations and don't have time for jerks". That actually cut out a lot of "junk" and got the attention of the great guys. Another thing I can suggest is not to meet the person right away (wait a few weeks and really get into in depth email conversations) You can usually spot a weirdo right away. And for your first meeting, decide on a meeting place through email, don't give out your phone number until after a few in person dates. You can easily change an email address, not as easy to change your phone number.

I met FH on match. I tried eharmony too but it took so long to get to the point where you got to just email with each other and not ask goofy questions that I got frustrated with it. You still have to do some screening of people but I met some nice guys and obviously my FH on Match!

Sounds like plenty of fish is coming up a lot! I'll tell her to check it out. My friends and I have a buddy 'check in' system on any online or blind dates and I know she has a good head on her shoulders to stay safe!

Good job Bella!! Well said!!! LOL! But yes, you have to sort through a lot of throwbacks ('crap fish' in my fishing terminology) before you find a keeper!

POF is really popular. Both FH and I were on it- but didn't meet through it. It is free, and has alot of profiles.

As far as which sites- avoid eHarmony like it's the plague! FH cancelled his account 3 years ago and STILL gets emails from them! He can't shut it off! They even called him 6 months ago to try to get him to reinstate his membership. He told them he was engaged, and she had the nerve to say "Well, when that doesn't work out because you aren't based on deep levels of compatibility, make sure you sign back up with us." Um, no...

I had some good dates off Match, but it got pricy. As far as good sites- they all have godo guys, and all have creeps. Talk to a guy for a while. If he's looking for an easy lay, he won't go go back and forth, won't want to talk on the phone for a while, and will push to meet quick.

She has to learn to read through the BS, and keep it simple and fun until that connection happens.

But Meetup is a good non-dating site to try!

@Meghan - I suggested meetup to her. I belonged to a few clubs and it was a great non-threatening way to meet people with similar interests without looking for dates, etc.

I think for a lot of us nowadays when we work with the same people, hang out with the same people and have our same routines it's really hard to meet someone without going online.

Friends of mine have gotten married from Match and eHarmony. I also have a friend who is with her BF now from Plenty of Fish. Also there is Events and Adventures (I think similar to meetup.) Here in DC we also have "Things To Do" (I think it might be in other cities too) Also just for a plug a friend of mine (who met his wife on Match) he started a dating site based on the love of sports, so if your friend likes sports it is http://www.mvpdate.com/

We met on POF as well. You just have to weed through the good, bad and ugly. I tried Match and it didn't work for me, thankfully. I found my FH on POF, we joke that I found him.

With my experience, might have been different for others, I went with eharmony and well still trying to get rid of their emails, ugh..

I went with them and it wasn't terrible. From the get go is good to be honest, and have our expectations and what we want up front! I had started talking to some people, all the while FH was getting the nerve to ask me out, because our friends wanted us to get together. I payed all that money and finally FH asked me out haha. So I never even met anyone. So I would have her go with something free!

My friend though she did her test and the results told her that she was too picky and eharmony could not help her...!!! That's nuts.
