I’m curious about what kind of relationships you all have with your in-laws or future in-laws. My FFIL is so laid back, and wonderful. He is just grateful to be involved when we include him and FMIL in things. FMIL is very nice, but can be pushy and wants to be involved in everything—and our personalities are very different. Overall though, I feel pretty fortunate.

What about you all? Trying not to turn this into a thread bashing the in-laws, but I’m interested in hearing about everyone else’s in-law situations or even advice on how to get along with your in-laws.

I feel more at home with my IL's than my own family.

Yep sure do. But he's 36 and never really been with someone for as long or as serious as us so I think they're just glad someone's taking him. Lmao jk... But seriously I get along with them.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my in-laws! FMIL and I are super close. She's the sweetest person I've ever met and has been so supportive of FH and I. FSIL and I are also really close. She has a son and has referred to me as his aunt for about the last year or so. It makes me feel so welcomed into the family. I plan to ask FSIL to be my matron of honor.

I have a great relationship with my in-laws! They treat me as they would their daughter. I know I'm really lucky. And my parents love my fiancé as well!

Unfortuneatly, no. We aren't on speaking terms with his sister and barely with his parents. After we got married, it turned out that they have a major problem with my religion.

I really like my in laws. We go over to my FMIL's house all the time for family dinners (more often than we go see my family) and I treasure those moments.

I asked for FMIL's and FFIL's blessing hours before proposing.

It means a lot that we get along, because FMIL had a big problem with FW being gay and I'm the first person she has brought home that the family has embraced. I like to think it has something to do with my sparkling personality, but in reality it probably has more to do with the fact that I encourage them to be themselves when we are around and that I include FMIL in various things with and w/o FW.

ALL relationships take work. How much of an effort you are willing to put into them is on you. Some are more than others. I've had my fair share of holding my breath moments with the IL's but that doesn't matter. They love FW and so do I. So we work together to make everyone as happy as possible in a (previously uncomfortable) situation. (The FMIL is rather Catholic so had to come to terms with our getting married and having kids)

FMIL is an incredibly difficult person. She no longer speaks to FH because I moved in with him. Doesn't call just to talk and he's not welcome home on holidays or for anything else if she's there. When they do see each other, she barely looks at him. It's infuriating. None of FH's five siblings can stand her. Neither can her husband.

FH's siblings are nice and pretty fun to hang out with, but they're not functioning adults because their mom sheltered them so much. The oldest one is 30 now and just...doesn't DO anything. They're all like that. A couple of them work, but none of them socialize, or date, or take initiative. So that mentality is difficult to be around for long periods of time. Thankfully, FH is nothing like that!

FFIL is super nice and he really saved FH and my ass when we couldn't find jobs to pay rent and bills. So thankful!

I so wish I had the kind of FMIL that would be like a second mom to me, but I've just had to accept that it'll never be like that.

I get along very well with FMIL, FSIL, and FBIL's. I don't always get along with FstepFIL, he's the kind of guys that its his way of the highway and my stubbornness can't handle it all the time so its created some huge fights. I can't stand FFIL, FstepMIL, and FhalfSIL's! They live in a different state so I don't have to deal with them much which is nice. Apparently they can't stand me either haha. FH said it doesn't matter to him what they think so that's a relief!

My in laws are much older (70's) old school Mexicans. We get along well but they are very opinionated and want to be involved in planning every party! They are upset that my MIL won't be able to cook for our wedding(wtf!?) anywho, I have no SIL and by the looks of it I'm glad I don't. Just three BIL and they're all chill. We all get along. FH gets along well with my bro and mom and is like whatever with my other bro and constantly bumps heads with my dad, huge bummer at times.

My FIL is very quiet but nice, pretty much easy-going. He never seems to have much of an opinion on things haha. He has been very willing to help us around the house which has been absolutely amazing- everything from installing a new disposal, to helping DH install tile and pergo floors, etc. which is such a huge help to us! So I would say we have a good relationship.

Since DH and I started dating in 2010, his parents were estranged/getting divorced so I really didn't have much interaction with his dad when we first started dating. Once we bought our house, we had a lot more freedom to invite his dad over and DH could spend time without him without upsetting his mom. But his dad didn't even meet my parents until after we were engaged (even though we bought a house together and were dating 4 years by then!) which is a little odd. I have been encouraging DH to spend more time with his dad's side of the family (aunts and uncles) since we've been engaged, which we have been and we've been enjoying the time spent with them!

I can't stand my MIL. I talk about her sometimes on here, so if anyone has ever read any of those posts they know - she is controlling, overbearing, says whatever comes to her mind even if it's horribly rude, obnoxious, doesn't understand social cues, passive-aggressive, manipulative, self-centered and is always doing what's best for her, plays favorites with her kids, total cheapskate, irrational, I could go on and on. I limit my interaction with her as much as possible and let DH communicate with her whenever possible. We actually haven't talked to her in almost a month since she's "mad" at DH and is giving him the silent treatment. She does this frequently when one of her kids doesn't do something she wants them to. It's actually much nicer when we don't have to deal with her so jokes on her! haha.

His mom's side of the family though, they're great! He has a bunch of cousins on that side of the family who are all younger than us but similar in age so we have a great time hanging out with them. His aunts are so nice and fun, his grandfather and step-grandma have been so welcoming to me and treat me like a granddaughter from day 1, so they are all just awesome! Soooo unlike his mom!

I really like FH's family, thank goodness. We live in the same metro as them, whereas my family is in another state. We spend way more time with his family than mine, so it would be rough if I didn't like them. FMIL is great. I sometimes hang out with her just the two of us. It's nice to have that, especially since my own mom isn't as close by. I get along fine with FFIL and FSIL, but wouldn't say we're close. My other FSIL lives on the other side of the country, so I've only met her twice. We get along fine though too. I also really like FH's extended family.

I love all of my in laws! Our parents actually knew each other before we started dating years ago and are so much alike with being very family oriented. Our siblings are all pretty close in age too from both families. We all spend a lot of time together! We're lucky Smiley smile

I love my in-laws. I wish my FH could say the same. My family is really difficult. My father has not warmed up to my FH at all and I don't talk to my mom or sister. Luckily, FH is really understanding about the whole thing.

Yep. My MIL is super pushy and controlling-- with everyone but me. If I say 'jump' she'd be three feet in the air before she'd say, "How high?" and what's funny is-- I am super laid back, have only once told her to back off (a week before the wedding she said FFIL couldn't come to the rehearsal dinner she *offered* to pay for, unless he paid a bunch of child support he owed her. As DH was 26, it seemed a little late to bring it up...), and cannot figure why I inspire such fear in her. My FIL has adored me since the first time we met, and the feeling was definitely mutual.

Mine don't speak the same language, but they're very sweet people. That barrier makes it hard to be close to them though. I get along really well with one brother and one of his sisters, and then just regular with the other 3 siblings.
