Sunday wedding on a holiday weekend - will people leave early?

Amanda, on April 6, 2013 at 8:23 PM Posted in Planning 0 20

Things are shaping up nicely for moving our date up to late summer 2013. One date we're considering (and that has a lot of appeal) is 9/1, the Sunday of Labor Day weekend.

I know guests often leave early from Sunday weddings, but is that true of holiday weekends too? We could have an earlier ceremony, I suppose, but we were really looking forward to an evening wedding/atmosphere. Should we stick to Friday evenings, or would you prefer a Sunday evening wedding if the next day was a holiday?

FH and I received an invitation for a wedding 9/1. We will attend, but unfortunately, we will not be able to attend the reception.

I am always off for those holidays so I would have no problem staying the whole time! And I would prefer it over a Friday I think.

I would absolutely prefer it over Friday. On Friday we would still have to leave work early, but on Sunday it's not a problem if Monday is a holiday. As far as leaving early, we only left one wedding early, and that one was much further south from us and it went until 4 am.

    So are your vendors available?

Thanks for the feedback! Most of our guests work typical 9-5 jobs here on base like me, so most should be off for federal holidays. And if not, well that's less money right? ;-)

Mrs S, all of our vendors that we've talked to so far have been wonderfully accommodating and understanding. Our venue/caterer, DOC, and videographer are all available on five proposed dates (four Fridays and Labor Day Sunday)! Still waiting to hear from our photographer and DJ, but I'm sure they're busy given that it's a Saturday.

We've told our immediate families and wedding party, everyone is on board and so supportive. Mom came over today to help cut tons of bunting, and FMIL helped me start crafting my BM gifts (picture to come soon) I'm starting to feel less panicky/sad and more excited! Holy crap, we may be getting married in four months!

That IS exciting, isn't it :-) I'm really glad to hear that your vendors are being so great!

I would stay. I'd be more worried about guests having plans for the Labor Day weekend already than whether or not they'd stay late that Sunday.

Mine is on Memorial Day because we knew most everyone would have that day off. People will probably not stay late which is okay with me. Out of towners will have to fly home that night if not the next day/morning.

@Jennifer B, that's certainly a factor too. We're going to send save the dates to key family members and friends as soon as we can. Everyone beyond that, I guess there's not too much we can do. I wouldn't hate it if we ended up with a smaller guest list (say if 100 out 150 attend), but I would be bummed if people left really early.

Although...it just occurred to me, guests may be just as likely to leave early on a Friday because they're tired from working all day.

I think Sunday on a holiday wknd works well for ALL involved:

MY CHOSEN WEDDING DAY Smiley winking (Sunday of a Holiday Wknd)- people can still attend to errands, enjoy their leisure time on Saturday, then attend your wedding but then have that additional day (MOnday) to travel and rest up before work on Tuesday.

We all make different choices for our days based upon: our guests, venues, budget, etc. But this was my line of thinking.

My wedding is on a Sunday, not of a holiday weekend though. I looked into Sundays bc it was cheaper, except holiday weekends most venues count it as a Saturday w pricing. I'm fine with the Sunday evening bc most guests are from OOT and had to use vacation days anyways.

Until when is your reception? How many people are within an hour drive from the venue?

Amanda, the important people will be there, and that's all that matters. Smiley smile

For what it's worth, ours is a Friday evening and a lot of people are excited about the excuse to leave work early. Smiley tongue

We have to be out of the reception by 10PM due to noise restrictions. 95% of our guests live within an hour or closer, and the other 5% are immediate family (my dad and stepfamily) and my MOH. I wouldn't be surprised at all if we pull a Mrs S and have a 100% acceptance rate.

@Jennifer, yes that's so true! I didn't mean for it to sound like I think Friday weddings are a bad idea - technically I'm still a Friday evening bride myself :-) just trying to process and talk through all of the options. There's pros and cons to everything!

Ha ha! We do need another example except for me :-)

Then I really don't think you have anything to worry about. Last Sunday wedding we went to was on Sunday until 10 and literally nobody left early. And Monday wasn't even a holiday.

It depends on how far away it is and how I felt about the couple. But more than likely I would stay.
