Storing the Gown BEFORE the wedding?

FutureMrs.B, on May 20, 2014 at 2:53 PM Posted in Planning 0 22

I just got my dress, and my wedding is a year away. How is everyone storing their gowns until the big day. I know it will be put away until at least January for Alterations and Then another month or so after that. I read somewhere that it should lay flat under a bed to prevent the weight of the gown from pulling itself apart. And wrapped in a sheet to let the gown "breathe".

Anybody have any suggestions or advice? I appreciate it, Thanks!

I plan on (when I get it) seeing if I can leave it at the store for as long as possible, after taking it to my parent's house and hanging it in the closet of one of their unused spare rooms. Do you have and an option like that?

Mine is at the salon. I was going to get married this year but now we are getting married next year. I am going to have to call both the salon and the seamstress to ask them what they think I need to do. I feel bad keeping the dress at the salon for a year.

I have a dress bag and will hang mine in my room in the dress bag. I've never heard of needing it to lie on the floor, but I suppose for a lacy dress that could be a very real concern.

My mom is talking about storing it at her house. My apartment is not big enough, plus me and my guy live together. My parents' house is pretty small, also. I've had a couple other family members volunteer to hold it for me. I am hoping it will workout well under my mom's bed. Last thing I want is to pay for extra repairs! It seems pretty important to her, like she's guarding it. I guess we will just have to keep an eye on it and go from there.

Mine stayed at the store. In fact it's still there now. I'll pick it up on Thursday.

My dress is all lace, but I've never heard of laying it down. The boutique told me to hang it up in a breathable bag, which they provided, away from sunlight.

It's hanging in a cedar closet with all of my grandmothers furs.

Luckily my alterations place still has my dress and probably will until just before the wedding so I don't have to worry too much about it!

Mine is sitting in my mothers closet in a sturdy garment bag. I got it last November and it is holding up just fine.

I guess heavy dresses can pull at seams and beading when on the hanger for too long. And it does make sense. The article I saw this fact on said gowns can usually be stored 7+ months without issue, but it said that heavier gowns ( Plus Size/ Ball Gowns/ Certain fabrics/ Heavily beaded) should lay flat to reduce strain on the stitching. I guess it doesn't hurt to take as many precautions as possible.. its a pricey investment!

This is the article I read:

Once I got the dress it was hanging in my closet inside the garment bag. Now alterations are being done on the dress and I will get it back a week or two before the wedding. I will then store it in our spare closet and hang it up without the garment bag to prevent it from getting wrinkled again since the alterations place will be steam cleaning it.

The good news it on mine, I think a wrinkle would be invisible (or add to the character)! But of course, I'm a freak for some things and will make arrangements to have it steamed right before my wedding!

My dress is also hanging in a white garment bag in the closet (the white bag is so FH doesn't see the dress in a clear bag). But unless you have a one of a kind dress that has lots of embellishment I can't imagine the weight causing the gown to fall apart. Consider this, the dress hang in dress stores for years at a time. Yes some may be moved more often than others but all dresses sit for extended times for a while.

I bought mine in May 2011 ( a couple months after we got engaged) It stayed in a dress bag balled up, yes balled up (it was a big semi-poofy dress until December 2012, when we started alterations!

Mine stayed at the salon in a bag until about 5 days before the wedding when I picked it up to bring it to my hometown for the wedding. Since DH and I were travelling in the same car they put it in a white bag so he couldn't see it. Then it got hung up at my parent's house since that is where I was staying and getting dressed.
