Stolen Money

So we checked the wedding gifts and we were missing gifts from 3 guests, one of them was my best friend. I called her to verify that she had given one to begin with cause i was concerned (not a pleasant conversation to have) turns out she had given a check made out to "cash" (which is the worst thing in the world to do). She put a stop on the check. Today, someone tried to cash it.... so now I know for sure that all 3 gifts were stolen (most likely during the ceremony). So sad to know people would do this. We are going to do our best to investigate it.

Advice: Never take your eyes off the money box. Make sure the box locks and make sure you have a safe place to keep the money during the wedding and count envelopes before.

It's amazing what people try to steal. My parents use to own a bar. One night someone tried to walkout with a piece of glass that was about 4 ft long and 3 ft high that had an etching of a movie star on it. Luckily one of the bouncers caught the guy as he tried to leave. But yeah, that sucks.

Luckily for us, our wedding coordinator's husband is retired police officer. After dinner he went and locked up all our gifts and cards for us.

I'm putting razor blades inside the opening of my box. That way if someone puts their hand in there I'll know.

That is terrible! I am having someone (most likely my mom) after everyone went through, take the gifts and cardbox to her hotel room (same place as reception).

Good information! Was not a concern of mine until now. Will definitely plan to secure the gift table and card box.

How awful! I'm so sorry you had to go through this! I am doing a locking mailbox for that very reason, there's already a few of FH friends that are a little shady. I just had a coversation with him tonight about the tip jar. He wants to use buckets, but I think its too easy to look like your putting something on, but take some out at the same time!

And I think some people write it to cash to avoid the holdup of cashing checks made out to the couple. I know you usually have to wait until names are changed legally to deposit them.

So when would be a good time to take the card box away? Right after dinner? May after the cake? I was thinking of having my dad move it upstairs at some point. (we rented a camping lodge, with a small attic/dressing area.)

Ours is being taken away right after cocktail hour. I think an hour is enough time to drop off a card. If not, we'll get it during our table rounds.

I am so sorry this happened to you! I just can't believe people have the nerve to do this! Of course, I work in law enforcement so I see my fair share of terrible people. Ugh.

I'm so glad you posted this~ I didn't even think this would be a problem. Silly me! Sorry this happened- sucks that it happened. It seriously never crossed my mind that people would pull this crap at a wedding! I'll be sure to have my gift table next to mine. Karma will prevail Smiley winking

We are having a large and hefty locked traditional post box at ours for that very reason. Even if you can trust all of your guests, you never know about the other staff the venue has in, especially if they hire temps for the event.

Stealing money/cards is unfortunately not a surprise.... but chafing dishes and entire containers of food? Wow. I guess you can't be too careful.

Phone Rings: Hey girl I was calling to see if you gave me a gift at my wedding?

Friend: Yea I did, but since you asked I want IT BACK! ...... AWKWARD......

But on the flip side... Glad you posted about gift thieves, maybe I need to find me some ushers that will turn into Bouncers for the reception.

It's so sad that this is a concern people have to have for their wedding day.

I worked a wedding once where they had two people stationed at a table collecting cards (read: checks). While I know most people would consider that rude, now I see why they might have chosen to do that.

Just have a lock on the box if you're that concerned about it

you might not notice someone grabbing a card or two, but you will notice them walking out with your box 'o money

This is why my card box is being glued shut! That way it is secure but won't give the impression of me not trusting people.

I just don't trust all these plus 1s and some family members to be honest.

Wow so sorry and this post definitely got me thinking. i honestly had no idea that this would happen but I guess because it would never cross my mind. I thought of the people of whom we are inviting and thinking if anything would disappear but not really. so i guess i will have to ask someone to just watch the cards.
