Spinoff: How much $ is appropriate as a wedding gift?

purplekitten, on March 27, 2015 at 12:58 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 60

In my case, it's for a friend, not a family member.... but comments on any situation are appreciated!

I've seen anywhere from $20 to $15,000. So...

We got an average of $50, but people also had to travel for our wedding.

I think it averages $50 per person. However, if you are close to the person I would traditionally spend around $100. Immediate family I normally spend more.

But, since you wanted suggestions......2 of my best friends have gotten married recently and I gave them $250. I was just invited to my cousins wedding that I am unable to attend due to prior engagements and I sent them $100 and I will also be attending her bridal shower so probably another $50 gift. ETA: cousin that I'm not that close to we gave them $50 and a small gift from their registry...I was also a broke college student back then...

We got between $20-$1,000 from our guests. Typically for friends I give between $75-$150, family is $150-$250.

I don't know where you're from, but from past threads, it always goes back to it being regional. I'm with JCC- we're always around $250 for friends and we're in Philadelphia.

A close friend or family member, 100-200.00 Not so close? I would usually pass (it's a major deal for me to get off on a weekene...), and send a nice card with a small gift card for a restaurant.

We give $100 for not-so-close friends. I think it also depends on cost of living in your area. In ny $100 is chump change compared to here in WV.

I with @Celia on this one $100-$200 for a close friend or close family member. If we're not really close and only speak at weddings and funerals. I'll just RSVP no.

Depends on how close you are - is it family, a close friend, or just someone you know casually? $50 average?

When I was single, I always gave $100, but as a couple we give $200.

It's all relative. depends on the relationship with the person, how much disposable income you have to spend, what's the cost of living for your area....it's whatever you're comfortable with. there's no wrong answer.

We give $150 for friends and $250 for family. That is from both FH and I. Not sure how we came up with those numbers. It all depends on what you can afford! Definitely don't give more than you can easily afford.

In Minnesota the average gift for a wedding is 20 - 50 per person.....(of course some are more and some are less) if its not your first rodeo.. even less.

We give a standard $100 per person. So $200 if my FH and I both attend the wedding.

It depends on how close you are and the region you are in. I'd say $200 is average in the northeast.

Other factors, like your disposable income and if you had to travel far for the wedding can come into play. And if I went alone I'd probably give $100.
