Small cake and donut wall?

Amy, on November 1, 2017 at 3:29 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 21

We are having a donut wall for our guests, but we still want to have a small cake for the cake cutting ceremony. Is this weird or do you think it would work?

We're doing this, plus other small desserts. Our caterer has a ceremonial cake option.

I've seen some on this forum say having a cake for yourselves and not everyone else isn't okay, "guests want cake, too!" An option can be a less expensive sheet cake served from the kitchen for the guests. Not related to you, but one of the venues we visited told us a funny story about a couple who had a donut wall, but didn't order donuts with holes in them.... The venue ended up having to smash the solid donuts onto the pegs. Pretty sure that wasn't the look the couple were going for! Smiley winking

Also, personally, donuts are breakfast food for me (but, like once a year). In theory? YUM! In reality? I always feel pretty sick after the first few bites. Maybe it works better if you're having a brunch wedding, but after a formal dinner? I would not be tempted at all by a donut -- on a wall or not.

Lots of people are doing this, as well as cupcakes, ice cream/frozen yogurt, etc..I would as that you kindly think of people with allergies and Celiacs Disease. Gluten free options would be so appreciated for guests like me

I think it's weird when the couple cuts a dessert, but that same type of dessert isn't available for guests. If you want to cut cake, I'd either set out some cupcakes or slices of sheet cake out with the donuts so that anyone who likes cake or thought yours looked so tasty they just have to try it can have a little cake. I'd try to make sure some of the sheet cake/ cupcakes have the same flavor as the cutting cake.

If you were "cutting" and sharing a donut, I'd say just serving donuts is fine.

I've had a couple of donut walls lately, but I can't imagine having a five hour old donut for a wedding dessert.....

The theory behind the wedding cake is that you all celebrate by sharing a common dessert. Whether you love that idea or not is up to you, but I don't think cutting a cupcake in half has the same punch, lol....

Our most popular option when I was still catering was a cake big enough for a small slice for everyone and then a patter of mini desserts and dipped strawberries on each table.

OCCASIONALLY, for very big weddings, we'd do a cake for 75 and cutting cakes in the back, but we always ordered a square display cake and the cutting cakes had two layers of filling so it looked exactly like the wedding cake. Doing a beautiful round wedding cake with costco sheet cakes for half the group doesn't 'cut' it. (sorry. couldn't resist....)

I really don't get donut walls. I don't want to eat off random surfaces from the room. I don't want donuts off the wall or salad off the floor or soup sluiced down the rain gutters. None of that seems necessary. It's like that lickable snozzberry wallpaper of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory only way too real and germy.

Food goes on plates that get washed. That still makes sense to me.

Everything Celia said!! Sorry, but I would definitely pass on a donut that's been hanging on a wall for a few hours..

Our daughter is going to do donuts and have a small cake for cutting. I would opt not for a wall tho. You can get pretty platters or cupcake stands for them. We had a donut wall at a wedding a month or so ago and they were falling off left and right. It was pretty for pictures, but that was about it. Let me find the pictures.

Here is the one from a month ago. Like I said, it did look pretty. But they did fall off. But she had lots of pretty plates for them also.

Agreed with PPs on the donut wall. Donuts are only good when very fresh. It's one of this things that you think is cute in theory, but doesn't really work. Donuts fall on the floor, some can't be reached and once some donuts are taken it doesn't look as nice. Much better left to Pinterest than reality. You can still have donuts piled on trays.

As for the cake, I know people are obsessed with the cutting tradition, but I think more people care about having a picture of it than the actual tradition of sharing with guests. I would agree that if you are going to cut a cake, have that cake for everyone or not at all.

We didn't have a cake, didn't cut anything and all was fine with the world.

I personally love wedding cake and if I went to a wedding where they cut a cake I better be getting cake and not some stale donut off of a wall.

So I did a donut wall for a girlfriends engagement party. I made the board myself and had zero problems with them coming off, but very few people at the donuts. I also did donut holes on sticks in mason jars around it and those were way more popular.

ETA: I did brownies and cookies in another area.

No, it's not weird. A lot of people do donuts or something in lieu of a huge traditional wedding cake.

The donut wall in non- negotiable. It was one of the groom's few requests. I'm thinking of getting cake donuts as they stay fresh longer. I was just wondering if cutting the ceremonial cake would be ok without serving it to everyone. I might do a groom's cake and then there would be some cake for those who want it. Plus the wedding cake will serve about 30-40 because of the style I was wanting. We are expecting about 75-100 guests, so maybe that would be an option?

I don't think donut walls are even pretty, sorry if that sounds offensive. I worked at Home Depot many years ago and all I can see is old donuts on a peg board (that should be hanging in a garage or workshop).

We did tiers of cupcakes and mini cupcakes as our dessert and then a small cutting cake from the same bakery so there was some uniformity. we didn't even eat the cake, just did a cut and then took it away, and everyone ate cupcakes. i'm not the biggest fan of donut walls either but would totally suggest the cupcake route if you want something that's easier than cake.

Can you do the donut wall as part of a dessert table with an assortment of other items, like cupcakes and candies? A ceremonial cake just for cutting is fine. If you're going to have servings for half the guests, I'd have the cake slices placed on the dessert table with other items, so guests can choose what they want.

Well we could technically have cake for all of our guests with the groom's cake. If we do one.

Why not cut and feed each other part of a donut?

Did the wedding have napkins or plates for the donuts? I am going to have a donut wall that is stand that sits on the ground and is about 5 feet tall. I do not have any plans to have a table next to it but am concerned if I need to have napkins or plates next to the wall.
