Small cake and donut wall?

We are having a donut wall for our guests, but we still want to have a small cake for the cake cutting ceremony. Is this weird or do you think it would work?

    Typically where I work we place napkins out for the donuts, not plates. This seems to work best at the venue. You may want to have a cocktail table next to the donuts so you have something your guests can use to pick up the donuts.
