Hi everyone,

This is my situation. My mom recommended me to a baker friend that she has. My mom said her cakes are delicious and I saw pictures and admittedly they look impressive. We spoke about my wedding cake vision (single tier cake plus 100 + cupcakes to make a tower) and she was able to give me a breakdown on price and everything. My mom is paying for the cake + catering. Well. The baker sent me the contract. I don't plan on signing anything until I try her goods myself. My daughter's bday is coming up this month, and my mom encouraged me to ask her if she could bake a cake for my daughter' bday which would double up as a "tasting." The baker rejected this, saying that "it's too hot to make cakes." I found this to be very odd. Bakers should be able to adapt to all weather conditions, no?

Then, the baker suggested that she can bring 12 cupcakes for me to sample at my daughter's birthday (the flavours of the cupcakes are the ones I asked her to make for the wedding) and then I can make my decision from there. I don't mind doing the tasting, but I'm worried about her rejection to make my daughter's birthday. She is a graduate of pastry arts. She is a baker. "I can't bake a cake for your daughter's birthday because it's too hot, the buttercream can melt." Sure, buttercream can melt but wouldn't bakers know how to do temperature control and things of that nature? Am I overreacting here? Because I am now worried that she'll make some excuse for my wedding. My wedding is April 18. Where I live, April can be really warm or still somewhat cold. So what if she makes an excuse? Any thoughts? Should I tread lightly?

Congrats on your big day! Would love to hear more about your big day. We may end up with some vendors in common.

You're not overreacting, I think that's weird Haha. And most bakers offer a tasting before you even order/sign a contract so the fact that she didn't even offer a tasting is weird to me

I’d be skeptical at her unwillingness to adapt. Maybe it’s a warning sign to find someone new.

The heat has nothing to do with baking cakes. Lol like the oven might heat up her house or whatever but she should get over that lol Buttercream can melt but she should be able to offer you something different that wouldn’t melt. Graduating from culinary school or anything like that honestly doesn’t mean a thing. She could’ve graduated top of her class and still suck. So I wouldn’t put to much weight on that part of her resume. I’d tread lightly.

If she means it’s too hot for HER to bake the cake then tough cookies, she’s offering a service. I don’t think her response was professional. I get that she’s not a baker yet with her own company but that would turn me away from her business.

    Hey Courtney,

My wedding is going to be all indoors and she knows. Same with my baby girl's bday party! It's so weird. Thank youuSmiley heart

Whether it's a cake or cupcakes, she still has to turn the oven on, but maybe for a little longer with cakes v cupcakes. Still it would only be like 10 minutes. Also, she's still using buttercream either way. Maybe cupcakes fit in the fridge better? I dunno. She kinda sounds unprofessional and overly dramatic.

What the heck, apparently she can't even bake a cake indoors when it's hot outside. Smh. This is messed up, and I agree that you should be wary!

    Hey Cheryl,

Tell me about it. Exactly. She still has to use the oven. It's something that I just don't understand. True, she does seem unprofessional.

    Hey Anna,

Right?! That's what I was thinking. Just feels like she plain and simple doesn't want to bake the cake for my daughter. So how am I to trust her with my wedding cake? Thanks girlSmiley heart

I know right?? Her statement makes literally NO sense whatsoever. How can you bake cupcakes but not a cake?

There is no room in wedding planning for unprofessional vendors. I had a consultation scheduled with a potential florist and he forgot about our appointment and never showed up. I took it as a sign that it wasn’t meant to be. Was he going to forget about my wedding too? It could have been an honest mistake but I wasn’t going to chance it. You me Baker is not willing to work with you on this or accommodate and is making up excuses.

If she was worried about the frosting melting she should/would have said the frosting will melt if I make that, let me try something else. Not it's too hot for me to bake.
Personally this would be a little too odd for my comfort level. You can try her cupcakes and see.
