Shopping for a wedding dress while pregnant?

Ashley, on May 15, 2012 at 2:39 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 14

I am currently 25 weeks pregnant. I am due August 28th 2012, and our wedding is April 20, 2013. I do not know when I should start looking for a dress or how I should even go about doing this at all. Should I wait until after I have the baby so I will be closer to my wedding day weight, or should I start now and guess what size I will be? I am completly lost on this subject. Everything else is a breeze =)

I say wait. i think you should have time after you give birth and recover.

Other than looking for inspiration pictures to bring with you once you do go shopping, I also suggest waiting. I think you should be able to find a dress in 8 months time after you've given birth (congratulations!) and started recovering.

I wouldn't try and guess your post baby size - reason being, I have friends who not only have become bigger in areas that they can't control or lose weight in post baby - i.e. breasts and hips - or they ended up being significantly smaller than what they were before they even got pregnant (I have 3 friends that this has happened to, weird).

If you decide that you can't wait for whatever reason, I would look into a dress that has an empire waist which will be very forgiving no matter what's going on with your body post baby

After I had my baby, I was bigger than I ever had been in my entire life!! I'm tall, almost 6' tall and have always been pretty slim, about 130-145 lbs (depending on how much I work @ it) but by the end of my pregnancy, I was over 200lbs!!! After I had my son, I lost alomost all of the weight w/in a few months, but for the last 2 years- I've been losing more and more weight as time goes on. I'm now smaller than I was before I got pregnant, but my body feels TOTALLY different, I have hips and clothes just fit differently. I guess what I'm saying, is that you have time. I know it's exciting- but wait till you have the baby to try on dresses, it'll make you feel "fat" otherwise. And you're not!! You're making a person! You're preggo and that makes shopping, especially wedding dress shopping difficult. Start shoping after you have your baby~ otherwise, you will have NO idea how anything will actually look after you have that little bundle!!! Smiley smile

Wait! And don't forget the birth control afterward...like I did! I had my baby, was planning my wedding, then BAM! Prego again. I'll be 6 month pregnant with baby #2 at my wedding. Lol.

I agree with everyone the only problem I am having with this is that I hear you are not supposed to start working out for 4-6 weeks prior to having the baby, and that will only leave me 6 months. Is that really enough time to get a dress and prepare for alterations and fittings?

It will be enough time - granted there will be the possibility of you having to pay extra to have it rushed, but it's doable

I'm not starting fittings on my dress until about 8 weeks before the wedding, so you'll still have four months to get a dress. If anything, you can contact some bridal shops to ask for estimates on the time it takes to get a dress, so you have that peace of mind.

I would wait until after the birth of the baby...see how you are at 6 weeks after the birth. You will have 4 months to get a dress, but you will have to settle for uncomplicated lines just in case you need alterations to take in the dress! All the best!

I personally would at least check out different stores in your area to see what styles of dress that you like to get an idea of the designer/style. I would also discuss with each store what kind of time frame you are looking at for your dress to come in. I know that some boutiques can take a long time- like 10 months or so and that some chain stores like AA or DB can take anywhere from a few weeks to 4 months for your dress to come in. You also would need to account for time to do alterations.
