Setting a Wedding Date + Wedding Planner Expectations

Jenna, on July 23, 2020 at 12:55 PM Posted in Planning 0 3

Hi All! Looking for some feedback here...

We got engaged back in February, before COVID happened. The only thing we have booked for our wedding (hopefully August 2021) is our planner. At the beginning she was SUPER responsive and helpful as we were beginning conversations with venues. Fast forward 5 months, she takes days to respond to emails and I don't feel like she is really providing any support for us. I know things are crazy and she has other clients who she is helping to reschedule weddings for next year, but am I off-base in hoping that we can get our date and venue nailed down for next summer ASAP?

Additionally, we decided that due to the uncertainties, we want to rent a private home and host our wedding there. She has not provided any options for us to look at. I have done hours of research on my own and asked her for help earlier this week but have not received a response yet.

Am I being overly dramatic in being frustrated by this? Knowing that SO many weddings are being re-scheduled to next summer, is it wrong of me to want to secure a date as soon as possible, and to have her provide some ideas for private homes? (I know it's a little bit more complicated to find private estate vs a common wedding venue, but venue selection and recommendations are included in our contract with the planner)

HELP Smiley smile I want to level-set my expectations and alleviate my own anxiety (also the reason we hired a planner in the first place..)

I'm so sorry Jenna, that's definitely stressful!! You're right - you want to get your wedding date and location nailed down ASAP!

I'm assuming that researching the venue is part of the planning service you booked? Planners offer so many different levels of service and "a la carte" options - each couple's experience can be very different! (Here's a great article that goes into this in more detail: The 7 Different Types of Wedding Planners and What They Do). They may not know of any private homes to recommend, but they should definitely be communicating with you promptly!

I'd recommend scheduling a phone call so there's a set time for you both to get back on the same page about the venue plan and what the next steps are!

I think you have the right to be upset by her lack of help and communication.

It is HER job to accommodate you and ease the stress of wedding planning. If she is unable to perform her duties, then she has broke the contract (assuming you signed one). I'd give her one more chance to get on top of things and if she can't, fire her and get some of your money back.
