September Weddings in Italy?

Melissa, on April 22, 2020 at 4:17 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 9

My wedding is set to take place in Perugia on September 5th. We have had a really long 3-year engagement and to think that we might have to push it another year is exhausting to say the least. While I don't think we will be in this same frenzy by September, the fact that it's a destination wedding (flying out mostly from NYC), I almost feel insensitive keeping it on. So many folks are out of work right now. The long-term effects of this will be horrible. When will the 2020-21 school year start? Will people have money to travel? Will people want to travel? Will we be ABLE to travel?

If the wedding weren't happening abroad I would not be so stressed about postponing, but as you can imagine it would suck to cancel and then things get sorted out by September. On another hand if people organize their travel and closer to the date we realize that things aren't much better... it will be worse to have to cancel last minute. What's everyone's thoughts?

So many questions with unknown answers. I certainly don’t like that we’re living in the unknown right now. Do you have a travel agent? Perhaps starting there would be best. If not, check your policies as far as cancellations go. My wedding is in Mexico in October and my TA said if I choose to postpone on my own right now that I would incur a penalty so it’s based to wait until we’re closer to the date to make a decision.

Thank you, Lisa! We have a wedding planning on the ground there. The region where we are getting married is very insulated and has barely any cases. She has told me that a few people have postponed their weddings already that were set for August. She said we have contracted very good vendors that she has great relationships with so I don't be stiffed out of anything for postponing. She just needs to know sooner rather than later so the good dates are not all taken.

My honest opinion? This isn’t going to be resolved to the point that most people are going to be very comfortable traveling internationally by September. I’m not sure about your guests and the size of your wedding— is it mostly immediate family who wouldn’t miss it for the world? Or did you invite 200 people?

I know if were my wedding guest list, even if travel was deemed “okay” in September, not many people would go. Maybe 30 out of 290. However, we had a semi-destination (1/2 the guest drove 2 hours each way and the other 1/2 flew in from the east coast/mid west) in early February and we had around 170 people out of 290 invited guests come. We had actually estimated how many people were going to come before we even sent out the invites and we were right on the money.
You know your family and friends best and based on that can weigh the pros and cons of whether to continue with September or postpone it.
I’m hoping you have the most beautiful and special day of your life though— whether this September or at a later time. 💕

Ahhh I see! Did she suggest a deadline to make your decision? Maybe hold off to next month since states are in talks of reopening. That’s good news in a sense as long as it’s being done the right way of course! I’m going to wait until August the latest to postpone.

I'm so sorry you're dealing with this Melissa! The international travel factor makes things even more confusing and difficult.

I've seen a few other discussions this week from other destination brides, I think they'll be the best people to connect with right now:

Sept 2020 Wedding in Europe..postpone or cancel?

Destination Weddings in October! Are you making canceling/postponing??

And FYI - we've started gathering tips and resources from WeddingWire in COVID-19 Wedding Support Central!

Our friends said France’s borders are closed until end of Sept. Europe may be an issue. And honestly, I think guests from NYC might be very troubled to travel this fall internationally. I would elope there (if you can travel ), or postpone a year.

Im so sorry you're going through this too! My advice is that if you had your heart set on your "dream wedding" in Italy, then I would postpone for next year. My original wedding date was June 20, and my venue let me pick an alternative date of August 7. But that date just didn't sit right with me. It wasn't what I wanted for my wedding. It felt forced and not genuine. So in order to have the wedding I dreamed of and still be able to have my bridal shower and then my bachelorette in Vegas, I have decided to postpone for 2021. Such a relief too. I feel happier and have found a silver lining throughout all this. I hope you do too!

Sorry that you are going through this. I was in the same situation, getting married in Lake Como September 21, 2020. We made the decision to postpone about two weeks ago, with our new date set for June 2021. We just figured that international travel probably wouldn't be realistic by September. It was also important for us to make sure that our guests felt safe, and we didn't want any anxious or unsettled energy on our special day. Furthermore, many people have been impacted financially, so we also wanted to be considerate of that. I feel confident in the decision, but it was a process to get to this point. Good luck!

Update! Just decided to postpone to August 2021. Feel very relieved! My wedding planner does too.
