Self Booked Honeymoon vs Travel Agent booked honeymoon... what are you doing?

LavenderJoy, on November 26, 2013 at 9:13 PM Posted in Planning 1 34

I would like to book our honeymoon soon. Part of me wants to book through a travel agent because I feel like everything would be taken care of and I don't have to worry about issues. The other part of me wants to research and hope I can "snag a great deal" booking on my own but then I think I may run into issues.

What are you all doing?

I am booking my own honeymoon but I am also a Disney "Earmarked" vacation planner. We are honeymooning at Disney World so I have all the knowledge I need to make plans.

I was debating about a travel agent too but last week I found exactly what I wanted on Expedia and so I just went ahead and booked! Where are you planning on traveling to? If you are going international I would suggest at least looking into a travel agent.

I booked our honeymoon myself on expedia. I did it so I could find the best deals and see reviews for the hotels myself before booking.

I've never used a travel agent in my life, so I didn't even consider it. What do you pay them?

If we end up going somewhere with all-inclusive resorts, i will probably book myself. if i go to europe, i will use a travel agent. my fsil used a travel agent and she didn't pay a fee. i think it might be like some realtors where they get their fees from the sellers

I'm still unsure. FH had a horrible experience we went to the Dominican Republic 2 years ago and it was his very first time out the country. So he hasnt really been to thrilled about considering a honeymoon outside the US.

The only time I used a travel agent was the first time I went to Mexico in 2001. I am pretty crafty when it comes to finding travel deals. I may consider it for Europe, but haven't decided yet. Where y'all thinking about going for the honeymoon?

Both. I usually talk to a couple travel agents and research on my own as well. I go with the best deal. For example, our last trip was to Vegas. I talked to a travel agent and she gave me an itinerary/prices and I was able to find a better deal on expedia. She then countered by matching the expedia price and threw in a resort credit so I went through her.

I tried using a travel agent but found that I could stay under budget much better on my own so I booked it myself.

Self. I wrote/won a grant for two people (myself and another teacher) to go to Italy and Portugal for three weeks. In there I had to do my own legwork/research/planning and I've done another trip since then. I completely trust my travel skills. For me, hiring a travel agent would be a complete waste.

Both. researched on my own and then when it came time to book, used a travel agent. He was free and was very knowledgable!

We are booking the honeymoon to Mexico ourselves through cheapcaribbean.com. It's much cheaper than the travel agent and we get all the same insurances!

We used cheapcarribean.com and it included our flights, transport from the airport to the resort, and resort. So we're set. We can book additional excursions if we want but we just want to be beach bums.

Also, their customer service was great. Our room upgrade got messed up when I booked (my fault - not theirs.) I called immediately and they fixed it. They also messed up my airplane ticket, because my name was legally changed, but my credit card wasn't. I put my correct name on the ticket, but their system automatically changed the name on my ticket to the one on my credit card. They CANNOT FIX THIS. So told me not to change my name on my passport til I get back and bring my marriage license when I go in case.

So if you are delaying your honeymoon at all (as we did) and plan to change your name...just wait til you get back. What a pain.

I'll be booking my own. I like to do A LOT of research before booking anything. And sometimes I book more than one thing (like a hotel for example) so that our plans can be fluid when we travel. As long as we cancel before the cancellation deadline then everything works out.

There is a huge misconception when it comes to travel agents... "they just want to make extra money on you so the charge more"

This is not true at all. I used to be skeptical so when i booked for my sister's DW last year i searched prices before getting the quotes from the agent. Her prices matched mine EVERYTIME if not cheaper.

They are paid once you book, so they are more interested in getting you a deal so you will book with them.

I am going travel agent all the way. why am I going to add more stress to my life when i already have a wedding to plan?!

Thanks ladies. I think I'm just going to book it on my own. Seems like that's what most of you guys did and not to mention you all probably save a lot of money. The Liberty Travel quotes I've been getting seem to be inflated. I used them when we went to the Dominican Republic.

We booked our own honeymoon. We're going to Hawaii and are using some of FMIL frequent flyer miles so we knew which hotel we wanted to stay in that we could apply the points to. Booking the hotel and airfare on our own but then we are going to go to AAA to book excursions and a few things to do while we're there.
