We're not, although we are Christians. Instead, I'm having the poem, Invitation To Love, read.

NO OFFENSE to anyone, but we wanted something different that I Cor. This is what we used.

    .

    Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor.

For if either of them falls, the one will lift up his companion. But woe to the one who falls when there is not another to lift him up.

Furthermore, if two lie down together they keep warm, but how can one be warm alone?

And if one can overpower him who is alone, two can resist him. A cord of three strands is not quickly torn apart.

    .

    Song of Solomon 8:6

Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame.

@Analy That (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12) is one I considered because I really like that verse. but I just don't know. I haven't been to a wedding with a reading (my family tries to keep the wedding part as short as possible to get to the partying... seriously) so I don't know how it will go over.

@Analy, I am thinking of doing the Ecclesiastes verse too, well after I talk to FH that is. He wants the ceremony to be super short. I don't want it to be long, but not in and out either. I love the 1 Cor verses but everyone does those.

I have been looking at a few and I do like 1 Corinthians but I also was looking at one in Ephesians and a few more. We are having two scripture readings and two different people doing them.

@ Jamie We had a very short ceremony. We had a very close friend, and former pastor of my husband's read the first scripture, and give the opening blessing. Then the second verse we used as a closing, before the final prayer. Our ceremony was only about 20mins.

At our Catholic wedding we have two reader's. They will each read scripture and then there are a few more readings. Are you getting married in a catholic church because we were given a book that gives you a ton of readings to pick from.

We are doing "Love is a Divine Fire" A reading from the song of songs

Then we are doing "Love is the bond of perfection" A reading from the letter of Paul to the Colossinans

Then my favorite reading is "The two shall become one" a reading from the holy gospel according to Matthew. Matthew 19. 3-6

My favorite line from it is....

"So they are no longer two, but one flesh.

Therefore what God has joined together, let no one seperate".

Both FH and I are not religious but do believe in a higher power. The only religious item in our ceremony is a Hawaiian marriage prayer we found while on vacation in Hawaii. We both fell in love with it and even bought the wood plaque it was engraved on. We are going to say it together before our vows.

    Here it is:

Lord, help us to remember the time we first met,

and the strong love that grew between us.

Help us to apply that love in practical things so nothing divides us.

We humbly ask for kind words filled with love,

and for hearts always ready to ask forgiveness, as well as to forgive.

Lord, we leave our marriage in your hands. Amen.

I have been planning all along to use 1 Corinthians. I recently came across this poem on another bride's blog. I am thinking about printing this in our program or possibly on the back of the fans if I decide to make them. It's kinda long so I might have to break it up.

The Art Of A Good Marriage

    By Wilferd Arlan Peterson

Happiness in marriage is not something that just happens.

A good marriage must be created.

In marriage the little things are the big things.

It is never being too old to hold hands.

It is remembering to say "I love you" at least once a day.

It is never going to sleep angry.

    It is at no time taking the other for granted;

    the courtship should not end

with the honeymoon, it should continue through the years.

It is having a mutual sense of values and common objectives.

It is standing together facing the world.

It is forming a circle of love that gathers the whole family.

It is doing things for each other, not in the attitude of duty or sacrifice, (cont)

    (cont)

but in the spirit of joy. It is speaking words of appreciation

and demonstrating gratitude in thoughtful ways.

It is not looking for perfection in each other.

    It is cultivating flexibility, patience,

understanding and a sense of humour.

It is having the capacity to forgive and forget.

It is giving each other an atmosphere in which each can grow old.

It is a common search for the good and the beautiful.

It is establishing a relationship in which the independence is equal,

dependence is mutual and the obligation is reciprocal.

It is not only marrying the right partner, it is being the right partner.

This is our ouline of our ceremony: (just a section)

    “A Christian world view…”

    Covenant vs. Contract

    1. Covenant is based on trust

    Contract is based on distrust

    2. Covenant is based on unlimited responsibility

Contract is based on limited liability

    3. Covenant can’t be broken, even if new circumstances occur

Contract can be broken by mutual consent

    In conclusion…

Covenant is a choice made out of love to be blessing to the other

Contract is entered out of fear to protect ones own interests

    Key word is love

    I Corinthians 13:4-8a

    “Biblical love is unnatural”

    Matthew 7:24-27

Oh and I believe we also read out of gen 2:21 where Adam & Eve marry "So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh at that place.

The LORD God fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man.

The man said, "This is now bone of my bones, And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man."

For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.

And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed. "

FH and I are having a Catholic Mass. We still need to pick out an OT reading, but we know we are doing John 15:9-17 ("Now remain in my love...") It's is a beautiful Gospel passage.

What's the poem about woman not being from a mans feet for him to walk upon or from his head to be superior to him but from his ribs to be equal? I'm putting the verses on out programs.
