Saying wedding vows through skype

Sweetbella, on July 26, 2010 at 4:55 PM Posted in Planning 0 24

Hey all, I been having unexpected expenses and will have to pay like 750 dollars for car and my hearing aid repairs. I can't afford that. We are paying for wedding, honeymoon and new apt. So I been thinking about getting married through skype. Military covers hearing aid and the repairs itself. So I could save $250 for hearing aid repairs. Does anyone know where I can get that done? My FS might can use skype next month. He is in deployment until dec. Thanks. And plz don't judge me.

I would first ask a minister if they would marry you through skype and if they have a camera you can use to do so. With a lot of men and women who are deployed, i wouldn't be surprised if there are ministers that do this. Good Luck! :-)

I was under the impression of no matter what, when you got married and signed the marriage licence, you both had to be present at the smae place with your witnesses?

I don't know if there is a way for you to legally and "officially" get married via skype, since you need to sign documents and have witnesses and stuff. It would be tough to get all of that organized, but if you could, it would certainly be a good way to help with costs if it's something you and your FH are interested in doing.

You mean you will be next to him in person and broadcasting over skype to your family and friends or saying vows to each other over skype?

JJ, she means saying vows to each other over skype. I think FMS is right and you have to be present in the same place, but we could be mistaken.

They probably do, but I'm not sure on the legal end of it, if that makes you legally married or not, or if the militray recognizes it as a marriage and will add you to the benefits or not.

Hi Megan, according to Wikipedia (not exactly a reliable source), most states won't legally recognize the marriage. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proxy_marriage

Off topic quick..Meridith--do you live in the cities?? Wcco is our local news station!!

Megan--I personally think it's a good idea but I don't really know if any state will see it as a "legal" marriage..my impression from what I've been told is that you have to both be present in front of the witnesss and pastor..but then again..I'm not a government worker lol.. I'm sorry you're going through this though :-(

California doesn't allow proxy marriage either. They require both parties be present.

Let me make this clearer... Most places in Cali don't allow it. SF for instance requires both groom and bride present at time of the ceremony.

Oh, I forgot to mention... My brother being in the Navy, he gave me a Power of Attorney to handle some of his personal business here (bills, car, bank, etc). See if your FH can get a Power of Attorney for you to obtain a marriage license (because typically, that's when both parties need to be present). Getting that should be free when done in-house (military). The only drawback might be a residence clause which idk if that exists for CA...

Thanks Tracy. I am very fed up with expenses, family drama and planning. I am at the point where I should call off the wedding and just elope. if I postpone it, I will go insane.
