Usually it's 6 months before your wedding, that way out of town guests have enough time to make travel arrangements.

Six to twelve months before your wedding is the norm for sending Save the Dates. However, some are sent as close as 3-4 months prior to the wedding. Is yours a "destination wedding" or does it take place around a holiday? It's best to get the word out in a timely fashion to give your guests ample time to prepare and make arrangements. This is just my experience: we ended up sending them out about nine months ahead of time. FH and I really felt like since we are having a destination wedding of sorts (our closest guests have a four-five hour drive), that we wanted to give working people and people who may have to book vacations a year in advance, an ample amount of time to take time off work. I realize that if you are having your wedding close to home where maybe guests can attend and not have to book a hotel, then probably six months out would be fine. But for us we wanted to make sure people had it on their calenders as early as possible.

Thanks for the input. My wedding is close by, so it is not a destination wedding. However, I know October is a busy wedding months. It is on Oct. 1, 2011. Any specific time I should have them out by.

    Thanks again

We sent ours at the 6-month mark, but if you have a lot of out-of-towners or are having a destination wedding, then you might want to send them earlier than that.

We didn't have them at all. We sent e-mails asking our friends for their postal addresses, and included our wedding date in those. At that point, save-the-dates seemed superfluous.

Betty: we're date twins!!! I sent my STDs out this past October (exactly a year out). We have a ton of international guests so they need the time to save and make arrangements to attend. For local guests I'd say 6 months would be ok.

I just sent mine out with the Christmas cards. I was not sure when I should send them out but happy now that I was within the time frame. Thanks!

If a majority of your guests live out of town, they say anywhere between 8 months to a year beforehand. I plan on sending ours out probably around 8 months before the wedding because we have quite a few people out of town. It's so they can make arrangements, especially since our wedding is in September, shortly after labor day and my dad's side of the family usually plans a huge vacation around then. I want to give them enough time to plan for it.
