Registry-how many place settings?

Shawna, on June 28, 2012 at 3:02 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 20

We are finishing our registry tonight (yay!) and I'm wondering how many place settings we should register for for our dinnerware. It's rare that we would have more than 6 at the table but I'm thinking 8 would be nice for hosting Christmas/thanksgiving etc.

What did you ladies go with?

I went with 8... in sets where there were six of a certain glass though i did opt to register for 2 sets (12pcs) and will just stash the extra 4 away incase some break. Smiley smile

It's generally in sets of 4, so if 4 is not enough, 8 would be typical.

Edit-I have glass sets in 6 too. So weird. Flatware and dinnerware in sets of 4's, glasses in 6...like the hot dog vs the bun dilemma. lol I'm glad they came to agreement on that. hahah

    We went with 8.

I mean, who has a table/space to accomodate 12? Not me.

I did 9 - 1 more than what I wanted so I had an extra incase I broke one.

Good thing, because my dishes are discontinued and I broke a bowl.

Depends on your family size/friend group size/plans for hosting. I love hosting so we do so a lot, and with both of our families considered it made sense for us to register for 12 place settings. : )

I registered for 8 pieces even though the salesperson helping us with our registry suggested 12. But she's from an Italian family and I knew we would never have 12 people at Thanksgiving dinner. I can barely cook for 3 as it is!

We registered for 12 place settings and wine/water glasses. We're using our china for everyday though too, so we wanted to have enough that we could have a few in the dishwasher and still be able to set a full table.

One of H's aunts gave us 14 wine glasses though we registered for 12. She wrote this cute little note about how if we throw good parties, we're bound to break a glass or two so, cheers and here you go. I thought that was really cool and I will be stealing her gift idea in the future! Smiley smile

FH bought me a china set when we first started dating Smiley tongue We were at a flea market and I fell in LOVE with a partial set that was there (lilies, of course) and he bought it for me. Through the years of dating I've managed to round that out to a 12 piece set, which is pretty good considering the pattern was discontinued 40 years ago! Anyway, to the point, I'm registering for 12 place settings of plain white china that I can use to supplement my existing pattern and have enough to seat everyone at Christmas. My family rotates who hosts, so I'll have the whole extended family over! I figure we can also use the plain whites for less formal occasions too. We do dinner parties, though, so I'd imagine most people don't need that many

We did 8, although that wouldn't be enough for Thanksgiving, as our little family alone will consist of 5 people. 3 of those people can eat off of kids plates at a kid table, however. Smiley smile

I actually have service for 16. That is alot but when I used my china, I used every place setting. I would suggest at least 10 if not 12, but it kind of depends on how many people that you think you will have for a dinner party.

We registered for 8 settings (comes with large plate, medium plate, bowl, mug) and then we registered for an extra 4 large plates, medium plates, and bowls so we have enough settings for 12 people but i didn't think we needed 12 mugs!

We did 12 cause that just about covers a day in our family with the three kids. For a dinner it covers if my family comes over.

I have eight right now. Just bought them. I might add 4 more. Just because when you figure in our friends and their current/future SOs at some point we'll have a bunch of people and I've already done the awkward half the people eat soup out of glasses, because I didn't have enough bowls thing when I had my own apartment.

We did 12, but it's everyday dishes too. Ours come in sets of 4 also and we registered for 3 sets. We thought it would be good if anything breaks. We would have at least 8 including us for Thanksgiving or Christmas.

Thanks ladies! 8 is what we were thinking but it just sounded like a lot to me (right now there are only two of us and we don't often have big get tethers-hoping that will change when we have a dining room!) so I was curious what others were doing. Makes total sense about breakage protection too! Now the trcik will be to find some we both like! Oy vey. Smiley winking
