Reception Food.....tacky??

blah, on April 21, 2011 at 8:26 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 49

Hi Ladies...so Im usually not the one to worry about what others think, but my FH and I decided to have bar-b-q at the reception. I really like the idea, but havent gone forward with it and cant really set it in stone because I feel like it will be perceived as tacky. Our wedding is at 2:00 i the afternoon and the reception will follow no later that 4:00....its not formal but I still have a little something holding me back. What do you guys think? I need blunt honesty here, I dont want to wait until the day of to realize I should have spoken up or changed the menu. Thanks Smiley smile

    It's not tacky - it's delicious!

We did casual food too, like sliders and pasta. The guests loved it and said it was way better than banquet hall rubber chicken.

Not tacky at all, I say if it is what you both want, go for it.

I am doing fajitas (beef, chicken and veggie) with all the fixings. If BBQ is tacky then so is fajitas, lol. Alot of my dad's side of the family are well-to-do and will probably think it's tacky but I don't care, it was inexpensive and everyone loves fajitas!! I think BBQ will be just fine and if you love it then you should have it :-)

Not tacky at all! BBQ is actually very common wedding food! It's the most popular package at many of the all inclusive venues I looked at!

Alot of it depends on the rest of your wedding. I don't think you can have BBQ with a 250 person, sit down meal where you ask your guests to wear balck tie. However, a more casual, party type atmosphere, especially mid-afternoon- PERFECT!

I love bbq, but then again, I like to eat lol. Seriously though, if that is a food you like, go for it! People love potatoes with bbq, and most people have potatoes anyway!

We are having a mixed buffet as well because we are half Puerto Rican and half Pennslyvania Dutch so we are going with traditional Puerto Rican food and American so there is something for everyone.

For our reception we are doing a pot luck; we have selected certain family members to make and bring certain dishes to cut our cost down. My dad is also buying us a pig to roast in the ground! We're gonna have an all around shin dig going on at our reception!

Just make sure it is not drowning in BBQ sauce, and have a tide pen (or 2) available in the bathrooms. Sounds yummy!

I have attended a semi-formal wedding that had bbq and it was fabulous. Just think through the items, so no ribs. If I can remember correctly (they wed in 2003) it was BBQ chicken bone on & carved prime rib. Sides were steamed vegetables, mashed potatoes… and something else. Corn bread was available. BBQ can get messy so just make sure you're picking a menu that can easily be eaten with a knife & fork. You don't want any BBQ sauce cheeks at your reception Smiley smile

Since I live in Texas. I've been to more weddings with BBQ for dinner than any other kind of reception. Definitely not tacky.

What is the venue like? My friend who got married last year had bbq for her reception (it was in a barn so it worked very well) and had it catered from a local bbq place and it was delish!!! If it clashes with the venue then maybe rethink it. But ultimately its all up to you!

We are having a destsination wedding and a bbq reception when we return. I'm asking guests to potluck side dishes & to bring a copy of the menu...BECAUSE... I want someone to take pics of the side dishes and after the reception, we will compile the recipes & pics to make a PERSONALIZED Newlywed's Cookbook courtesy of our family & friends. And maybe even something to pass down at the same time. Smiley smile

I don't think it is tacky...just make sure you have a huge bib so you dont get any on your dress!

I don't think it is tacky either, just have lots of napkins, and if you are a messy person like me, wear a bib!

We are actually going to be doing porchetta for our welcome dinner on the Friday of the wedding weekend. It is the Italian version of a roasted pig, and it is darn good.

Sounds wonderful! FH and I have considered it...

But PSA: Please remember that some could be vegetarians, so if veggie burgers or some portobello mushrooms are an option, it might be nice to serve them Smiley smile
