Hi Ladies...so Im usually not the one to worry about what others think, but my FH and I decided to have bar-b-q at the reception. I really like the idea, but havent gone forward with it and cant really set it in stone because I feel like it will be perceived as tacky. Our wedding is at 2:00 i the afternoon and the reception will follow no later that 4:00....its not formal but I still have a little something holding me back. What do you guys think? I need blunt honesty here, I dont want to wait until the day of to realize I should have spoken up or changed the menu. Thanks Smiley smile

Without reading any of the other posts, first, in my world a BBQ at a wedding would be tacky.

My SIL wanted that option. We had to tell him that an elegant wedding is not the place for a BBQ. He was not happy, but that's life. We encouraged him to have his mother to a BBQ rehearsal dinner, but at that event he wanted Mexican food. Oh well, no BBQ anywhere. LOL!

I don't think BBQ food is tacky. It can be dressed up and is delicious. However, be sure that its not too smokey and blowing in the direction of the guests. I was a vendor behind a BBQ pit at a festival and smelled like smoke for days. Plus I had a headache from it Smiley sad

    Sounds delicious!

It's only tacky if you have your guests bring their own food!

I don't think it's tacky either. I had a moment of my own tryig to decide between a plated dinner and a buffet, thinking that the platted was more elegant and the buffet may be a little "less elegant". But what I had to realize was that, number 1-cost, and number 2-this is a day for family and friends to celebrate with us, it's about us and should be a fun celebration, I'm not trying to impress the jones's, I just want to start the rest of my life with my FH. As long as they eat, what difference does it make, lol

It's not tacky. You can have bite size pieces, which yields a less chances of mishaps. wet wpes would be a nice addition

Not tacky at all. It's all in the presentation.

Not tacky at all. We are having a pot luck reception. We are asking certain friends to bring specific things and we are providing the rest. Much better in my opinion than some fancy meal that is over priced and is usually not all that great.

Not tacky, but it could be messy! Like it was mentioned, have vegetarian options. And I know this sounds weird... but also have bonesless options. I know I'm not alone, but I can't eat meat off a bone.

I think some good beef brisket and bbq chicken sandwiches would be good and not as messy!

We are doing a pig roast too. I was a little iffy on it at first but when I traded roasted potatoes for the potato salad and green beans for the baked beans, I felt better about it.

I went to one last year, and it was fun. They told us in the invitation that it was less formal, and for ladies to wear flat shoes. I really appreciated that.

BBQ can be tasteful as long as it doesn't turn into a picnic.

They are great. I would suggest this:

    Have a 3-course BBQ reception -

Course 1: Corn on the Cob, mini burgers & hot dogs

Course 2: Veggie, chicken, macaroni and cheese

Course 3: small "minute" steaks, rice & beans, Raw Salad

With each course - have a different selection of wine and beer - say the first course could be a rose wine and a light beer

The second course could be white wine and a dark beer

The third course, red wine, like a nice cabernet sauvignon and a different beer

Offer soda and/or a great punch made with fresh fruit.

Use real dishes, simple glassware and metal utensils and fabric napkins.

Each course has it's own style, and everyone will really love it! You don't have to serve gigantic portions as they are having 3 courses.

End the evening with coffee, cake and a champagne toast!

    Good luck!

    Best!
