Really long engagements!!?!

Tori E., on August 23, 2010 at 3:27 PM Posted in Planning 0 38

My fh and I got engaged on Christmas eve 2009 and are having a very long engagement. Possibly when he graduates college in either fall 2011 or spring 2012. Or it could go longer, b/c i have in the process of trying to go back to school for an education degree and it will probably take me 3 years and can't start till spring 2011! With all this said we are looking at a very long engagement which is good and hard at the same time. Just for peace of mine and knowing we aren't the only ones is there anyone else out there that had a long engagement or in the midst of a long engagement like us?

Nov 08 to Jun 10 here. Not long in the grand scheme of things, but it's apparently unheard of in this part of the country. People actually told us they thought we weren't going to get married because we set the date out "too far to be serious." I told them they were full of crap.

You think its long, until it starts to fly by. FH and I were engaged the same time is you. Set the date for Oct 2011 and its amazing how quickly it is going by. But if I were you I'd tentively set your date and start looking. Reserve anything large (church, reception hall) first (and early). You can then shortlist all of the most important things to you so when you're start looking you have a good idea of what you want. Enjoy the time you have it makes things less stressful.

We had you all beat. We got engaged in August 2005 and are not getting married until September 2011. We originally hadn't planned on waiting this long, it just kinda happened that way. The final date got set after I graduate law school. Just having everything out of the way so we can enjoy being married is a motivator to us. It wouldn't have been fun trying to spend newlywed years while I went through law school. Poor FH gets neglected enough now, and would have been much more if we were living together and I couldn't cuddle up with him in the evenings when I had to read.

Long engagements aren't all that bad except for everyone asking you when you are finally going to get married.

Mine will be 2 years exactly. It was just what worked best for us in terms of finances and planning long distance.

A long engagement can make a lot of sense sometimes - if you're saving for a wedding or a home, if one of you needs to finish school or get started in a career, etc.

The drawback to long engagements is that they can be a strain on family and friends. Most of the friends I've had who got engaged tended to go on and on about engagement, wedding planning, etc. Which is fine, since it's natural to be excited!

But six months to a year of weddingmania is one thing, but several years of it can be exhausting. My suggestion is that couples in long engagements try and refrain from excessive wedding talk, at least until the date gets closer.
