Rant - The term "Old Lady"! - Thoughts?

Carole M (a.k.a "old tart"), on April 26, 2011 at 4:38 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 48

Hi ladies, I was just kidding with the FH about being Mrs. Biyatch on the back of the bike for our first ride. He turned around and said, "No, you are then my old lady." Okay, I know it is biker lingo, and yes, he ran upstairs to avoid the pen I just threw at him. However, in the group we ride with it is not something ever said.

What are your thoughts on being called "FH's Old Lady"

To me, it is like calling me a C yo U N ext T uesday. They are fighting words. Smiley winking

Oh...I will happily call myself biyatch. Smiley winking

I've been watching a lot of vintage biker movies lately (Chrome and Hot Leather, which is astonishingly not a porno). The term "old lady" makes me cringe every time.

It's a pretty redneck term too...which is why my old redneck ass FH always calls me that. I used to hate it and get mad, but i just laugh at it now. Oh and I point out how he's also 10 years older than I am...that shuts him up really quick like! hehe I know it's all in good fun, but yes, sometimes I wanna smack him for it.

Brittney...It is a redneck term as well? lolol See, a city girl from Philly learns something new every day. Thank you. I can handle being called a lot of things, but for some reason, that one bothers me. Smiley smile

I think Old Lady runs up there with ma'am. :Smiley atonishedhudder:: I dont what it is...but those two titles make me cringe.

ON a gushy note though....my FH was talking to a friend while I was standing next to him and he said "and my wife and I wil be..." really? Im gonna be a wife? *swoon*

My EX used to call me his "old lady" and I always smacked him for it. (no that is not the reason he's my ex.) I was in my 20's.... I agree 1000% with you Carole, it's just like the C word.... Some of the guys on the fire department tease DH about me being his Old lady since I am three years older than him, and he promptly set them straight!

It's disrespectful, tasteless and down right RUDE!

As I teach my boys (now 8 and 5) there are three things you NEVER say/ask to a woman:

    1- How old are you?

2- how much do you weigh?

    3- when's the baby due?

I think I'll add that one to the list!

@Ashlee....Oh my....the biker soap. We love it. It should be coming back on soon. The thing is, the people we ride with are nothing like those one percenters.

My FH and his buddies all refer to their girlfriends/wives as their old lady. Like Brittney at first it bothered me. Now I'm used to it. We have Johnnie's old lady, Bruska's old lady and I'm Pumpkin's old lady. But my FH says I am the best old lady out of all of them. :-)

To me, "old lady" and "old man" are your parents, not your SO. But I have occasionally been known to refer to NotFroofy as my "trophy wife." LOL

LOL@ C yo U N ext T uesday!!! Carole you are too funny!

I'm from, Cali, and that term is used frequently by Latino men and women (old lady, old man.) Older Black men say it a lot too. I dated a Latino guy in my late teens, he would call me that, but it didn't bother me because I knew I was no where near old. Now, if my hubby called me that, he'd be dodging more than a penSmiley smile

I think it really all depends on your from as well. I think it's more "accepted" down here in the south. Hell, I always thought is was the normal thing for a man to refer to his wife as! lmao

Im with you Brittney b. My man grew up in Louisiana and thats what he grew up calling his woman. It doesnt really bother me because he uses it kinda like a term of endearment (sp?) when talking about me to his buddies...or his mom lol You can thank Sons of Anarchy for bringing it back though lol

Old lady was a term that was used in the 50's when it was hip to do so. My old lady this, or my old man that -- it just meant that you were in a committed relationship. I'm with you, any other term would sound better and I hate the word "old." No, he's not disrespecting you - he's just in the wrong era.

Tell him how you feel and if you both can choose your favorite terms of endearment it would avoid a lot of fights!
