PSA....PLEASE READ BEFORE SUNLESS TANNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!

theragirl, on September 5, 2012 at 9:06 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 24

I had to post this after reading the other post about spray tan vs tanning bed!

OMG please DON'T spray tan!!!!! Have you read what they actually use? They use an acetone called DHA this is the literature I was givin for mystic tan: " sunless tanning booths like those offered by mystic tan and their ompetitors use dihydroxyacetone to darken the skin. While the FDA in 1977 approved DHA for topical uses, this does not mean its safe for mucus membranes or sensitive areas like you lips. Furthermore, the FDA never considered that DHA would be applied as a mist! In fact some of the chemicals found in DHA are LEAD, MERCURY AND ARSENIC"

LEAD, MERCURY AND ARSENIC are highly Toxic and can kill you if invested enough! One of my friends is battling lead poisoning right now ( not because of tanning) I wouldn' t wish what she is going through on anyone. Please inform yourself before sunless tanning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh yeah! After I got spray tanned the ONE TIME, which I hated, they did a thing on GMA about how bad it was for you. I didn't say anything because she said it was organic spray and I don't know anything about that.

Thank you! I hate when people say that it is a good alternative to the sun! Honestly, the sun is so much better than spraying chemicals all over your body. People forget that your skin is the biggest organ of your body! It absorbs everything and can be poisoned and damaged. And what it absorbs effects the rest of you too.

Ok so if we can't use tanning beds and we can't spray tan, what on EARTH are those of us supposed to do that need color!!

The only thing left for me to try is to get a natural tan by the autumn sun .

My sunless tanning place has this on the FAQs...thoughts?:

The active ingredient in self tanning products is dihydroxyacetone (DHA). DHA has been used in cosmetic preparations for almost 30 years and was listed with the FDA in 1973. It is declared safe and suitable for use in cosmetics and used to color the skin. DHA is derived from glycerin (vegetable origin) which is a commonly used cosmetic and food ingredient. DHA is not absorbed into the body and poses no possibility of toxicity.

Still better than skin cancer in my book.

So what is good for us?! Basically nothing... Tanning in a bed causes cancer... Tanning sunless causes problems.. Drinking diet coke also causes cancer... and warming food up in plastic bowls...The list goes on & on & onnnnn. Everything causes cancer is seems like.

Its fine. You'd be surprised whats in makeup, lotions, etc. Makeup and lotions are filled with chemicals.. The FDA is very strict on what they approve.. All of the above is certainly fine in moderation. How about the chemicals you put on your head when you die your hair? Drinking booze and the air we breath have more toxins for your body.. Dont be scared to use some sunless tanning lotion. There are also cosmetic grades and non cosmetic grades. Or that 10 minute walk to your car is when the sun does a ton of the damage..

This brand is the poo its been around for 27 years. Its more pricey but soooo worth it. I know they carry it at the Christmas Tree store.

Our skin is 'designed', if you will, to tolerate the sun.. think about the native americans or people in africa.. they dont wear sunscreen and their skin naturally adapts to the sun. im not saying go out and get blistering burnt but the sun is not bad for you. think about the vitamins!! besides that, EVERYTHING causes cancer these days. think about all the preservatives in food and pollution in the air. get some color on your skin the way you always have and ul be fine!!! we cant live our lives in fear!!!

Native Americans and African(dark ethnic skin types) people naturally have more protection in the skin, white people do not. (very light skinned people not necessarily just white). They can take more of a sun beating than a light skinned person. When your skin tans its actually your bodies way of protecting itself. Pigments come together to create the tan which help prevent the sun going thorough more dermis layers of the skin causing worse damage.

This is why dark skinned age more gracefully they already have more protection.

The key is moderation dont fear the sun or tanning lotions. Vitamin D is good for you just don't bake every day! lol Specially in oil! Use SPF, 15-20 is good just reapply every couple hours and put your first dose on at least 30 minutes before sun exposure so your skin has time to soak it in.

Honestly ANYTHING these days is bad for you. I've never been spray tanning but I enjoy the tanning bed probably like 6 times during the winter.

The place where I got my spray tan, provided nose plugs, eye covers, and they instructed me to use a heavy layer of the barrier lotion on my lips. I think that this world is sooo over doing it on the cancer warnings. You can get cancer from eating french fries, most cosmetics, and we should never pump gas!!! With everything moderation is the key, an occasional spray tan isn't going to give you cancer.

I only sprayed tan twice before my wedding and this was so my shoulders would be an even colour since I was wearing a strapless dress and I had tan lines from the summer. It will probably be the only time I do this. I don't use tanning beds and wear suntan lotion whenever I go outside in the sun.
