My fiancé and I were discussing wedding stuff and he mentioned potluck. I don't know how to feel because while it may be cheap, it's generally looked at as tacky, requires lots of planning (don't want 3 platters of sweet potatoes no matter how good they are!) and difficult for out of towners (no kitchen and such) any advice?!

    DO NOT HAVE A POTLUCK.

    DO NOT HAVE A POTLUCK.

    DO NOT HAVE A POTLUCK.

    DO NOT HAVE A POTLUCK.

Potlucks = cheap, tacky, rude & food poisoning.

Don't ask people to bring food,

    that's so incredibly tacky and rude;

don't be a nut, stick with your gut,

and say "HELL NO" to a pot luck!

Get professional catering. If you're looking to keep costs down, look into BBQ or Italian.

Thank you everyone for the input!!! Glad I got some sight from my side! I don't think he's seeing it because most of his family will be in town and ALL my family is from out of town... Plus I would end up having to do ALL the planning! Thank you soso much for your responses!

Please no potluck! There are lots of cheap catering ideas (grocery stores, BBQ, etc). Don't make your guests cook for your party!

Imagine Aunt Mildred with 9 cats making a casserole full of cat hair. Imagine cousin Johnny who can't manage time showing up late because he was making rice. Imagine Kevin from the office bringing in his world famous chili to your reception.

Edit: I see you've responded, but yes show your FH this thread!

Yay! OP, you've seen the light! I would add an update to the title of the thread so you don't continue to be bombarded with pleas to avoid a pot luck.

If I was invited to a wedding, in town or out of town, and asked to bring food.. I think I would be busy that day and go out for a real meal with FH

Don't do it. Hire a caterer.

It's very rude to invite your guest to your wedding and expect them to pitch in food to feed everyone. Don't do it!

It's not only considered tacky is downright dangerous. If foods aren't kept at the right temperatures the whole wedding could get sick.

OP You can change the title to say "updated" so that people will know you came back and decided not to potluck. Thanks for taking everyone's advice in stride. Stick around!

I hate cooking for myself why should I cook for your wedding? Plus I wouldn't eat at a wedding that was potluck. I've worked food service and I know how difficult it is to keep food at the right temp. I wouldn't trust your Great-Aunt Edna's potato salad not to give me food poisoning.

    No. No potluck.

Seriously, guys? I've been to a million potlucks, from church luncheons, to school parties, to family reunions. Probably a good 100 potlucks, and I have never had, nor heard from anyone else who had, food poisoning.

Now, I'm not saying you should or shouldn't have a potluck at your wedding (I know it's not something I would ever do), but to everyone saying "it's a definite that someone will get food poisoning" that's just not true.

@kalee serious question: have you really been to a bunch of potluck weddings?
