My fiancé and I were discussing wedding stuff and he mentioned potluck. I don't know how to feel because while it may be cheap, it's generally looked at as tacky, requires lots of planning (don't want 3 platters of sweet potatoes no matter how good they are!) and difficult for out of towners (no...

I don't know how to feel because while it may be cheap, it's generally looked at as tacky, requires lots of planning (don't want 3 platters of sweet potatoes no matter how good they are!) and difficult for out of towners (no kitchen and such) any advice?!

@taryn No, I've never been to one, and I personally don't think they're a good idea. I actually never even knew it was a thing until I started reading the forums here haha. I just disagree with the comments that say every potluck ends in food poisoning.

Please don't do a potluck or self cater. Get a caterer. Your guests are there to be guests not to cook. Also, how are they going to keep the food warm and prevent food poisoning.

Please be accurate Kalee, no-one said that 100% of the time people get food poisoning. If you're going to argue against a point, please get the point right.

I attended a wedding where everything was prepared by the couples immediate family. Not the guest.

They said it was super cheap but stressful the day of.

Possibly do a breakfast or brunch to lower the cost.

The key is that no-on s kitchen is equipped to make food for a large number of people. Therefore you have to improvise. When that happens, food safety is at risk. That's why there are caterers. Also if your guests get sick good luck covering the medical bills, time lost from work, and etc.

My SIL went to a potluck wedding recently. And she took food. Apparently in her social circle, it's a thing. I kept my mouth shut when I saw the invitation. She has rude friends who have no clue what proper etiquette is.

@Elphaba - that's horrible! I've never been to a potluck wedding but after reading that I don't think I'l ever feel safe eating at a potluck of any kind. Botulism and 2 deaths - so tragic.

Because I've posted this before I may get banned for it. Please. Thank you.

    Why a Honeyfund is rude:

    -you're asking people for money

    -the website takes a percentage

-people can't afford a vacation so why should they pay for yours

    -it's tacky

    -poems don't make it cute

    Asking for cash:

    -it's tacky and rude

-guests know how to buy gifts

    -just don't make a registry

    -you can always upgrade something

-living together doesn't equate to not needing up upgrade

-why should someone give you cash

-if you're trying to save money by collecting others, reevaluate why your wedding is so expensive

-have the wedding you can afford.

    -poems don't make it cute

    Self catering

    -botulism

    -glitter covered slaves

    -botulism

    -potlucks are gross

    -health risks

    -stress

Dry/cash bar (only okay with AA or religion)

    -not everyone is an alcoholic

-supply or beware of drunk drivers from bootleg

-thank your guests don't punish them

    Friendors:

    No one wants to work

    They aren't qualified.

Ask him if he wants to run the risk of your guests eating mac and cheese that was prepared like this.
